Tampa International Airport is one of the rare US airports where you can smoke after security, thanks to its hub-and-spoke layout where each airside satellite building has its own outdoor smoking patio. You do not need to ride the shuttle back to the Main Terminal and re-clear TSA just to have a cigarette. Vaping and e-cigarettes follow the same rules as smoking and are permitted in the designated outdoor areas.
Before Security
The Main Terminal itself is entirely smoke-free indoors, but getting outside is easy:
Step out any exit door on Level 1 (Baggage Claim) or Level 2 (Departures) for a quick curbside smoke.
Use the dedicated smoking patio on Level 3 for a more comfortable landside option.
These spots are accessible to anyone, including arriving passengers waiting for ground transport.
After Security
Each of TPA's four airsides has its own outdoor smoking area. You clear TSA at the entrance to each airside, so once you're through, you can use that airside's patio without going back through screening.
Airside A: Outdoor smoking area beside Gate A18. Confirmed open as of October 2025.
Airside C: Smoking area near Gate 30. Note: the old spot near Gate 45 is now a service animal relief area, so follow current signage to Gate 30.
Airside E: Small outdoor area in the back corner opposite Gate 62, next to the Four Green Fields pub. The former spot near Gate 75 has been converted to a service animal relief area, so Gate 62 is the only option here.
Airside F: Outdoor patio across from Gate F88, near a bar. Confirmed open as of July 2025.
Vaping Rules
Vaping and e-cigarettes are treated the same as cigarettes at TPA. Use the designated outdoor airside patios or the landside curbside areas and Level 3 patio. Vaping indoors anywhere in the terminal is not permitted.
Lighters and Matches
Regular lighters and one book of safety matches are permitted in carry-on baggage or on your person. Torch lighters and strike-anywhere matches are prohibited by TSA.
Transit and Layovers
Because security is at each airside entrance rather than centrally in the Main Terminal, you cannot exit to the landside and re-enter airside without going through TSA again. If you have a connecting flight on a different airside, you will need to re-clear security for that airside, but you can smoke on the new airside once through. Plan your time accordingly.
Bottom Line
TPA is genuinely smoker-friendly by US standards: every airside has a post-security outdoor patio, so you can smoke without leaving the secure zone. Just confirm the exact spot with airside signage when you arrive, as locations have shifted in the past.
