Smoking policy at Almería, Almería Airport (LEI)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is prohibited inside all terminal buildings in Spain under national smoke-free legislation. Violating indoor smoking rules can result in fines under Spanish law.
Almería Airport (LEI) is a pleasant surprise for smokers, particularly once you clear security. The standout feature is a large open-air terrace after security on the first floor, where you can smoke freely while enjoying views of the runway and the Mediterranean Sea. Before security, smoking is restricted to designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building, in line with Spain's nationwide indoor smoking ban.
Before Security
Like all Spanish airports, Almería does not permit smoking inside the terminal building. Landside, your only option is to step outside to a designated smoking zone near the terminal entrance or exterior. There are no indoor smoking rooms before security.
Head outside the arrivals or departures entrance and look for designated smoking signs and ashtrays.
These outdoor spots are open-air and unshaded, so conditions depend on the weather.
After Security
This is where LEI genuinely stands out among smaller Spanish airports. After passing through security control, there is a large terrace on the first floor with a bar where you can smoke. Multiple traveler reports from 2018 through September 2024 confirm this area is accessible to all passengers post-security.
The terrace is covered by a white lattice roof structure that provides shade while keeping the space open-air.
Wooden bench seating is available, and the bar means you can grab a drink while you smoke.
Views stretch across the apron to the Mediterranean, making it one of the more scenic airside smoking spots in Spain.
An earlier report (2018) specifically mentioned a smoking area near gates 13/24, which aligns with this terrace location.
Vaping Rules
Spanish airports treat e-cigarettes the same as traditional cigarettes under the country's smoke-free legislation. Vaping indoors is not permitted. Use the same designated outdoor areas before security, or the airside terrace after security.
Bottom Line
Smoke outside before security, then enjoy the surprisingly good airside terrace with sea views once you're through. No paid lounge access required.
