Smoking policy at Madrid, Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD)
Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), officially known as Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, has a mixed smoking policy. The smoking rules are different in every terminal, so the most important thing is to check which terminal you are flying from before you pass security.
Before Security
Smoking is prohibited inside the enclosed terminal buildings.
The easiest way to find a smoking area before passing through security is to go outside the terminal. Travelers have also noted that the landside areas are relatively relaxed, with smokers not always restricted only to one clearly marked area.
For this reason, the outdoor areas before security are your best option if you want to smoke:
before check-in
before your flight
after arriving in Madrid
After Security
After security, the situation varies considerably by terminal.
Terminals 2, 3, and 4S
There are no smoking areas after security in Terminals 2, 3, and 4S.
If you are departing from one of these terminals, smoke outside before going through security. There is no smoking room or smoking terrace airside, meaning past security.
Terminal 1
For Terminal 1, the situation is less certain.
The former VIP Sala Cibeles lounge had a smoking terrace, sometimes mentioned as being near gates B26/B28. Access was usually limited to:
lounge users
business class passengers
Priority Pass holders
passengers paying for lounge access
Current reports are mixed, and the smoking terrace may no longer be reliably available. If you are departing from T1, it is best to check with airport or lounge staff when you arrive.
Community update on 21 May 2026:
An anonymous user confirmed the lounge terrace is still available and the price currently is 50 EUR (~58.17 USD). Entry fee includes free food and wine makes it worthwhile.
Terminal 4
The best place to smoke at Madrid Airport is in Terminal 4.
There is a large covered smoking area after security, before the entrance to gates J40-J9, on the lower level.
The area is well signed and much more comfortable than a basic smoking corner. It includes:
seating
tables
vending machines
power points
plants
food vendors nearby
For some arriving passengers, this area may also be useful before collecting luggage.
Final Tip
Madrid Airport can be convenient for smokers, but only if you are in the right terminal.
If you are flying from T2, T3, or T4S, smoke before security. If you are flying from T1, do not rely too much on the old lounge smoking terrace, as it may or may not be available.
If you are in T4, the post-security smoking area is the most comfortable and reliable option at the airport.
