Smoking policy at Siliguri, Bagdogra International Airport (IXB)
Warnings & Caveats
Vaping (e-cigarettes, IQOS, heat-not-burn) is illegal across India under PECA 2019. Devices will be confiscated at security or customs. Personal lighters are confiscated at Indian airport security. Use the wall-mounted electric lighter machine inside the smoking zone. Smoking outside designated zones is a compoundable offence under COTPA 2003, with a spot fine of up to Rs 200.
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is a compact regional airport that genuinely accommodates smokers, with options both before and after security. The most convenient post-security option is a designated smoking zone at the far end of the departure hall, near gates 1-3, next to the Okyati store. This is a small but functional setup that lets you smoke without leaving the secure side.
Before Security
Landside smoking is permitted in designated spots in the parking area directly in front of the terminal entrance. It is a short walk from the check-in hall and is the obvious choice if you arrive early, are dropping someone off, or want a last cigarette before heading through security.
An older traveler report from November 2019 also mentions a smoking room upstairs behind the restaurant, before security, which was reportedly crowded but free to use without a purchase. It is unclear whether this specific room still exists in its original form, so treat it as unconfirmed and rely on the parking area as the reliable landside option.
After Security
There is one confirmed post-security smoking zone. After clearing security, walk up the ramp, turn left, and head straight to the end of the hall. The zone is on the right side, next to the Okyati store near gates 1-3. It is not prominently signed, so just keep walking until you reach the corridor's end. The space is basic and can feel cramped during peak hours when multiple flights are boarding simultaneously.
One important practical note: personal lighters are confiscated at Indian airport security checkpoints. The smoking zone at IXB has a wall-mounted electric lighter machine. These devices can be slightly fiddly: wait for the red light, press the button, wait for the amber coil to heat, then light your cigarette from the coil.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is completely illegal in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA) 2019. This covers all e-cigarettes, vape pens, IQOS-style heat-not-burn devices, and related accessories, regardless of nicotine content. Do not bring any vaping device to IXB or anywhere else in India. Customs and security actively look for them, and confiscation is the minimum consequence. Fines and imprisonment are possible for repeat offences.
Bottom Line
You can smoke after security at IXB without exiting the terminal, which is genuinely useful for a small regional airport. Just walk to the very end of the departure hall near gates 1-3, find the Okyati store, and the smoking zone is right there.
