Smoking policy at Belfast, Belfast International Airport (BFS)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking inside the terminal building is a legal offence under Northern Ireland public health legislation. Smoking near or approaching aircraft is explicitly prohibited and may result in legal penalties. The former £1 airside smoking gallery beside the Lagan Bar is permanently closed as of 22 January 2025 and will not reopen in the foreseeable future. Vaping (electronic cigarettes) is subject to the same restrictions as tobacco smoking throughout the airport.

Belfast International Airport (BFS) has significantly restricted smoking since January 2025. The airside smoking gallery, which was the last such facility in Northern Ireland, closed permanently on 22 January 2025 due to persistent vandalism. If you smoke, your only option now is to do so before you pass through security, in the designated outdoor areas at the front of the terminal building.

Before Security

Designated smoking areas are available outside the main terminal building, both on the way in (departures side) and on the way out (arrivals side). These are open-air spots at the front of the terminal, accessible to anyone before entering the building. No specific signage or shelter details are confirmed in available sources, but the airport officially directs all smokers here.

  • Departures: Use the outdoor designated area at the front of the terminal before you enter to check in.

  • Arrivals: A designated area is also available outside when you exit after collecting your bags.

Keep in mind that smoking is explicitly prohibited anywhere near aircraft, so do not attempt to smoke on the apron or in any boarding area.

After Security

There are no smoking facilities airside as of January 2025. The external smoking gallery that previously existed in the departures lounge, located beside the Lagan Bar and accessible for a £1 charge, has been permanently closed. The airport confirmed this closure is due to vandalism and stated the situation would be kept under review during ongoing building works, but as of early 2025 there is no indication it will reopen.

Because there is no re-entry option once you pass through security at BFS, you cannot go back outside for a smoke after clearing the checkpoint. Plan accordingly and use the landside areas before you go through.

Vaping Rules

Electronic cigarettes are treated the same as tobacco at BFS. The official policy explicitly states that vaping is not permitted in the terminal building, and the same designated outdoor areas apply. Vaping airside is also not permitted.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting through BFS and need to stay airside, there are no smoking options available to you. The Causeway Lounge, the airport's own paid lounge open to all passengers regardless of airline or ticket class, does not offer a smoking facility. Access to the Causeway Lounge can be pre-booked online or paid at the door subject to availability, but it will not help you smoke.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you go through security at the outdoor areas in front of the terminal. Once airside, there are zero options, so time your last cigarette carefully before joining the security queue.
