Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has gone through several changes to its smoking policy in recent years, and as of 2025 the situation is clear but inconvenient: smoking is prohibited inside both terminals, and there are no active airside smoking rooms. If you need to smoke after clearing security, you will have to exit the terminal entirely, pass through border and security controls again, and re-enter for your flight.
Before Security
The only option for smokers is to step outside the terminal building before you go through security. Designated outdoor areas are available landside, and these are the spots you'll want to use before checking in or before heading to the gate.
Outdoor designated smoking zones are located outside the terminal entrances, accessible to anyone before the security checkpoint.
These areas have metal benches and standing ashtrays, as seen in traveler photos from the airport.
No specific signage or named zones have been reported, so follow the crowd or look for the ashtray stands near the main entrance.
After Security
This is where things get difficult. As of an August 2025 update, smoking is prohibited inside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 airside. This is a permanent policy change, not a temporary closure due to construction (an earlier 2024 report had suggested the closure might be construction-related, but that has since been confirmed as incorrect).
The smoking area that previously existed next to Gate C3 is no longer active.
A smoking area that was reported in Terminal 2 near Gate 6 (with a maximum capacity of 30 persons, accessed through a glass door) also appears to be closed.
Transit passengers who need to smoke must exit through border and security controls to reach the outdoor landside areas, then re-queue through security to return to their gate. Allow yourself significant extra time if you plan to do this.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting at BEG without a checked bag and do not want to go through the full border control process, be aware that exiting airside to smoke is not a quick or simple process. You will need to pass Serbian border control, smoke outside, and then clear security again. During busy periods this could easily take 30-45 minutes or more. Plan accordingly and factor this into your layover time.
Vaping
No specific information is available about vaping rules at BEG. Given that smoking is banned inside both terminals, it is reasonable to assume vaping indoors is also not permitted, but no official policy has been cited in available sources.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you go through security, because once you are airside at BEG there are currently no smoking rooms or designated areas available. Transit passengers face a significant inconvenience if they need to smoke during a layover.
