Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is only permitted in the officially designated areas ("Dohányzásra kijelölt hely"). Smoking anywhere else inside the terminal buildings is prohibited under Hungarian law, which restricts smoking in most public indoor spaces. The Skycourt Terrace (Terminal 2A) closes at 21:00, so late-night departures may find that option unavailable.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Central Europe. Smoking is permitted in several designated outdoor areas both before and after security, so you won't need to hold out until you land. All smoking must take place in the marked designated zones ("Dohányzásra kijelölt hely") only.
Before Security
Landside, you'll find multiple designated smoking areas outside the terminal buildings, covering both the departure and arrival sides. These are open-air spots clearly marked with official BUD signage. You can use them freely before checking in or after collecting your bags.
Outside Terminal 2A and 2B departures: Several spots are positioned along the exterior of the terminal building under the covered walkway canopy. The official BUD signage (bilingual Hungarian/English) marks each zone.
Outside arrivals: Designated areas are also available on the arrivals level for those meeting passengers or heading to ground transport.
After Security
This is where BUD genuinely stands out compared to many European airports. There are at least three distinct airside smoking options:
Skycourt Terrace / Terrace Cafe, Terminal 2A (3rd floor, food court level): The longest-established airside smoking spot. After clearing security in Terminal 2A, walk past the duty-free shops and take the escalators on the right up to the 3rd floor food court. The entrance to the open-air terrace is on the left. It has a bar serving beer, wine, coffee, and cocktails, plus a toilet. Opening hours are 05:00 to 21:00. This is the most comfortable airside option and is free to access for any passenger with a boarding pass.
Smoking Terrace near Gate A17, Terminal 2A: A newer addition, located in the middle section of the Terminal 2A pier next to Cafe Frei. Signage at Gate A17 points you toward the smoking terrace, toilets, and baby-changing room. Convenient if your gate is in the A pier and you don't want to walk back to the food court.
Observation and Smoking Terrace, Terminal 2B (roof level, between gates B8 and B9): Opened in September 2022, this is a 200 m² rooftop terrace built on a separate load-bearing steel structure on the roof of Terminal 2B. It's specifically for non-Schengen passengers after passport control. The terrace has a covered (non-smoking) section for bad weather and offers views over the apron. Seating and greenery were added after the initial opening. Access is via the stairs between gates B8 and B9 on the 3rd floor.
Vaping Rules
No specific vaping policy is mentioned in official airport communications or traveler reports. In the absence of clear guidance, treat vaping the same as smoking and use the designated outdoor areas to avoid any issues.
Transit and Layovers
If you're transiting through Terminal 2B on a non-Schengen connection, the rooftop terrace between B8 and B9 is your go-to spot after passport control. For Schengen connections through Terminal 2A, the Skycourt Terrace and the Gate A17 terrace are both accessible without re-clearing security.
Bottom Line
BUD is genuinely good for smokers: free open-air terraces are available both landside and airside, no lounge membership or fee is required, and the Skycourt Terrace even has a bar. Just stick to the marked zones and you're set.
