Smoking policy at Dallas, Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking outside the designated areas may result in fines up to $500 under Texas law. Always use the provided ashtrays to avoid littering citations. Vaping is subject to the same restrictions as cigarette smoking.
Dallas Love Field (DAL) is a smoke-free terminal in every sense: no smoking or vaping is permitted anywhere inside the building, and there are zero airside smoking facilities once you clear security. Your only legal option is to step outside to one of the designated outdoor smoking zones before you go through TSA, or to exit the secure area entirely if you need a smoke mid-trip.
Before Security
Two outdoor designated smoking areas are available landside, both clearly marked with signage and cigarette disposal bins:
Curbside smoking zone near the Baggage Claim area on the upper-level departures/arrivals curb, at least 25 feet from any terminal entrance as required by Texas law.
A second designated zone near the Rideshare/Valet Parking area on the east side of the terminal, also marked on the official airport map.
Both spots are fully or partially exposed to the elements. Dallas weather can be brutal: expect intense heat in summer, thunderstorms in spring, and cold snaps in winter, so dress accordingly.
After Security
There are no smoking areas, smoking rooms, or smoking lounges past the security checkpoint at DAL. This applies to all concourses and gate areas. No airline lounge at Love Field currently offers a designated smoking space either. If you need to smoke after clearing security, you must exit the terminal completely and re-enter through TSA screening.
Re-Entry Planning
Re-screening at DAL typically takes 10 to 15 minutes under normal conditions, but can stretch to 30 minutes or more during peak morning and afternoon departure banks. If you have a tight connection or a boarding time approaching, budget that time carefully before stepping outside.
Vaping Rules
Vaping and e-cigarettes are treated identically to traditional cigarettes under the airport's policy. They are banned inside the terminal and permitted only in the same outdoor designated zones. Do not vape in gate areas, restrooms, or any indoor space.
Transit and Connecting Flights
DAL is a domestic-only airport, so international transit is not a factor. However, if you are connecting through Love Field, you will need to exit the secure area entirely to smoke, then re-clear TSA. There is no airside connection between gates that bypasses security.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you go through security at one of the two outdoor curbside zones, and plan at least 15 to 30 minutes for re-entry if you step out mid-trip. There are no airside options whatsoever.
