Smoking policy at Bangkok, Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport (DMK)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking outside designated areas can result in a fine of up to 5,000 THB (some airport-specific sources cite 2,000 THB). All indoor smoking rooms have been permanently closed since February 3, 2019. Vaping, e-cigarettes, and heat-not-burn devices are illegal throughout Thailand. Penalties can include up to 10 years imprisonment or fines up to 500,000 THB (~$15,000 USD). Thai customs actively confiscates these devices.

Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) operates under a strict no-smoking policy introduced on February 3, 2019, when Airports of Thailand (AOT) permanently closed all indoor smoking rooms across its six managed airports. For smokers, this means your only realistic options are a couple of designated outdoor spots landside, both before security. Once you clear the checkpoint, there is absolutely nowhere to smoke until you land at your destination.

Before Security

Two locations have been reported by travelers for pre-security smoking:

  • Terminal 1 outdoor area near the check-in hall: An outdoor smoking zone reportedly located outside the check-in hall toward the far end of Terminal 1, primarily serving international departures. It is open-air and accessible before you check in or pass through security.

  • Parking Building 2 smoking room (Terminal 2): A small, container-style smoking room reported inside Parking Building 2, accessible to domestic travelers using Terminal 2. This is a compact, enclosed unit rather than a full lounge.

Both locations are based on traveler reports rather than official AOT signage documentation, so their exact status can shift. Check with airport information staff on arrival if you cannot locate them.

After Security

There are zero smoking facilities airside at DMK. No smoking rooms, no outdoor terraces, no paid lounges with smoking access have been documented past the security checkpoints. This is a hard stop: once you are through, you cannot smoke until you exit the airport at your destination. Exiting and re-entering after security is not permitted.

Vaping and E-Cigarettes

This is critical: e-cigarettes, vapes, and heated tobacco devices are completely illegal in Thailand, not just at the airport. Penalties under Thai law can reach up to 10 years imprisonment or fines of up to 500,000 THB (roughly $15,000 USD). Thai customs at DMK actively searches for these devices. Do not bring any vaping products into Thailand under any circumstances.

Fines and Enforcement

Smoking outside designated areas carries a fine of up to 5,000 THB (some sources cite 2,000 THB for airport-specific violations). No-smoking signs are posted throughout the terminal. Enforcement is active.

Transit and Layovers

If you have a connecting flight through DMK, plan on not smoking from the moment you clear security until you reach your next destination. There is no airside relief valve here, paid or otherwise.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you check in, using the outdoor areas at Terminal 1 or the Parking Building 2 room at Terminal 2. After security, there is nothing, so plan accordingly.
