Smoking policy at Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking rooms near Gate A52 and A66 in Terminal 1 were reported closed as of February 2026. Verify availability on arrival. No smoking is permitted in open terminal areas, only in designated enclosed cabins or outdoor areas outside the building. Gate C area in Terminal 1 has no airside smoking option; the only Camel booth is before security near C13/C14.

Frankfurt Airport is one of the more smoker-friendly major hubs in Europe, with designated smoking rooms and Camel Smoking Lounges spread across both terminals airside. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the open terminal areas, but enclosed smoking cabins and lounges are available past security in most gate areas. Landside, your only option is stepping outside the terminal building to designated outdoor areas before you go through security.

Before Security

Landside smoking is restricted to outdoor designated areas outside the terminal buildings. There are no indoor smoking facilities before security. If you are departing from Terminal 1 Gate C area, one traveler (October 2025) specifically noted that the only option near C Gates is a Camel smoking booth located just before security, close to gates C13/C14, but still on the landside. Once you clear security at C Gates, there are reportedly no smoking booths airside in that section.

After Security

Both terminals have multiple enclosed smoking cabins and Camel-branded lounges airside. These are free to enter and open to any passenger with a boarding pass.

Terminal 1, Area A (Level 2):

  • Near Gate A11 (confirmed as recently as May 2023)

  • Between Gates A23 and A25

  • Across from Gate A52 (note: a February 2026 report says the room near A52 was closed, so verify on arrival)

  • Across from Gate A66 (also reported closed as of February 2026)

Terminal 1, Area B (Level 2):

  • Between Gates B42 and B48

  • Across from Gate B23

  • Near Gate B13, a Camel Smoking Lounge was confirmed in May 2023

  • There is also a smoking terrace near the B Gates area, reportedly accessible by following signs toward the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge. It is an outdoor terrace airside and can get warm in the afternoon.

Terminal 1, Gate Z (Level 3):

  • Near Gate Z11 (confirmed November 2025)

  • Between Gates Z23 and Z25

  • Across from Gate Z52/Z53

  • Across from Gate Z66

  • Opposite Gate Z68 (confirmed February 2025)

Terminal 2, Area D (Level 2):

  • Between Gates D24 and D25

  • Level 3 also has a smoking area in the D section

Terminal 2, Area E:

  • Near Gates E21 and E22 (Level 2)

  • Close to Starbucks near Gate E3 (Level 3)

  • Near Gate E5 (reported July 2019)

Smoking Rooms: Status Caveats

Some rooms have been opening and closing over time. The A52 and A66 rooms were specifically reported closed in February 2026. The Z11 room was confirmed open in November 2025. If you are transiting through Terminal 1 Area A, do not rely solely on the A52 or A66 rooms without checking on arrival. Connecting between areas A and Z is possible without leaving the sterile zone by following "Connecting Flights" signs, and takes roughly 10-15 minutes.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting between Terminal 1 areas, you can move between Area A and the Z/B/C sections airside without re-clearing passport control. The walk between areas takes about 10 minutes. Terminal 2 is connected to Terminal 1 via the SkyLine monorail, but moving between terminals requires re-clearing security.

Bottom Line

Frankfurt is genuinely one of the better airports in Europe for smokers airside, with free enclosed smoking cabins in most gate areas of both terminals. Just double-check the specific room near your gate on arrival, as individual cabins do occasionally close.
