Smoking policy at Gothenburg, Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT)

Warnings & Caveats

Since July 2019, outdoor smoking near the terminal entrances is restricted to marked zones only. Smoking outside these zones can result in enforcement action. Passengers at Gates 19B/20B (non-Schengen split configuration) cannot reach the airside smoking cabin without re-clearing passport control. Smoke before entering that holding area. The Gate 22 non-Schengen smoking area is traveller-reported and not officially confirmed by Swedavia. Verify with airport staff or follow terminal signage on the day.

Göteborg Landvetter (GOT) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Scandinavia. Sweden's tobacco law permits enclosed, ventilated indoor smoking rooms, and Landvetter still has one airside, plus marked outdoor areas landside. You won't be left scrambling, but you do need to know where to look before you clear passport control.

Before Security

Landside smoking is restricted to designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building, set back from the entrances as Swedish law requires. Since a stricter outdoor policy came into force in July 2019, the areas are not always easy to spot, so look for marked zones rather than lighting up near the doors.

  • Marked outdoor zones around the terminal exterior, set back from the main entrances.

  • On arrival, once you have cleared customs and exited the building, there is an outdoor smoking area roughly 30 metres from the terminal exit.

  • Arriving non-Schengen passengers (including those from outside the EU) pass through passport control on Level 4. There is a smoking area 100 metres before that passport control point, also on Level 4, so you can smoke before you queue.

After Security

The main airside option is an indoor smoking cabin located across from Gates 19A/20A, just before the passport control checkpoint. This is accessible to most departing passengers in the main Schengen departures area. The cabin is ventilated and enclosed, consistent with Swedish tobacco regulations.

  • From gates 11-18, the walk to the cabin is manageable but not short; there are no moving walkways on that stretch.

  • Important gate-split caveat: When Gates 19/20 are used for non-Schengen flights (frequently UK departures), those gates are relabelled 19B/20B and separated from the rest of the departures hall by a glass wall. Passengers already holding at 19B/20B cannot reach the smoking cabin without going back through the passport checkpoint. If you are on a non-Schengen flight using those gates, smoke before you enter the holding area.

  • For non-Schengen departures using other gates, travellers report a second smoking area near Gate 22, approximately 100 metres beyond passport control in the non-Schengen zone. This is traveller-reported rather than officially published by Swedavia, so follow terminal signage on the day.

Vaping Rules

E-cigarettes are treated the same as cigarettes under Swedish tobacco law. Vape only in the designated smoking areas described above. Snus (smokeless tobacco) and nicotine pouches, on the other hand, produce no smoke and can be used anywhere in the terminal including airside. Both products are sold at terminal shops.

Transit and Layovers

If you are transiting through GOT, your access to the airside smoking cabin depends on which zone you are in. Schengen-to-Schengen transits keep access to the Gates 19A/20A cabin throughout. Non-Schengen transits should use the Gate 22 area after clearing passport control. The airport is compact enough that no smoking area is more than a five-minute walk from any gate.

Bottom Line

Smoke outdoors before security if you can, but the indoor cabin near Gates 19A/20A means you are not stuck airside without options. Just be aware of the gate-split situation if you are flying non-Schengen via Gates 19B/20B.
