General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport (BOS)

Boston Logan is a fully smoke-free airport indoors, with all smoking confined to designated outdoor areas located before security across Terminals A, B, and C. There are no smoking facilities of any kind past the security checkpoints, and Terminal E has no designated smoking areas at all. If you need to smoke after arriving at Logan or during a layover, you will have to exit the terminal, find a designated zone, and go through TSA screening again before returning to your gate.

Before Security

There are 13 designated outdoor smoking zones spread across three terminals, all on the curbside before security. Here is a breakdown by terminal:

Terminal A (4 areas):

• First Floor near Gate A106, close to Baggage Claim A4 and the shuttle exit

• First Floor near Gate A102, near Baggage Claim A1 and the shuttle exit

• Second Floor near Gate A204, close to the Conveyance area

Terminal B (8 areas):

• First Floor near Gate B117, close to the pet relief area, Smarte Cafe, and Baggage Claim B10

• First Floor near Gate B102, adjacent to the Assisted Care Restroom

• First Floor between Gates B105 and B106

• First Floor between Gates B114 and B115

• Second Floor near Gate B206

• Second Floor opposite Bank of America ATM near Gate B207

• Second Floor near Gate B216

Terminal C (1 area):

• Second Floor (Level 2) outside near Gate C102, accessible via escalator from the Terminal E connector corridor

After Security

There are zero smoking facilities airside at Logan. No smoking rooms, no smoking lounges, and no paid lounge with a smoking area exists past any security checkpoint. Once you clear security, your only option is to exit the terminal entirely, smoke in a designated outdoor zone, and re-queue through TSA. Build in at least 30-45 minutes if you plan to do this during a layover.

Terminal E

Terminal E handles all international arrivals and many international departures, but it has no designated smoking areas. Travelers departing from or connecting through Terminal E who want to smoke must walk through the connector corridor to Terminal C, take the escalator up to Level 2, and use the smoking area near Gate C102. The airport's interactive map shows this route clearly: from Terminal E Level 1, take the corridor to Terminal C, then take the escalator up to Level 2.

Vaping Rules

Vaping and e-cigarettes are treated the same as tobacco under Massachusetts law and Logan's policy. They are banned inside all terminal buildings and are only permitted in the same designated outdoor zones as cigarettes. Massachusetts also prohibits flavored tobacco and vaping products statewide.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting on an international itinerary through Terminal E, note that you must clear U.S. customs and immigration before you can exit to smoke. After smoking outside, you will need to go through security again for your onward flight. There is no airside transit path that bypasses customs at Logan.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you clear security; once you are airside at Logan, there is no way to smoke without exiting the terminal and re-clearing TSA. Terminal B has the most options with 8 zones, while Terminal E travelers must walk to Terminal C.
