Smoking policy at Iași, Iași International Airport (IAS)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is prohibited by Romanian law in all enclosed indoor areas of the airport outside of designated smoking facilities. Smoking outside of designated areas can result in fines. Always follow posted signage, as smoking rules and area availability can change.
Iași International Airport (IAS) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Romania, with designated smoking booths available airside in multiple terminals after security. Landside, smoking is restricted to outdoor designated areas outside the terminal buildings, in line with Romanian law banning smoking inside enclosed public spaces.
Before Security
Once you arrive at IAS, your only landside option is to smoke outside the terminal building in the designated outdoor areas. There are no indoor smoking rooms before the security checkpoint. Look for signage directing you to these spots near the terminal entrances. Romanian law prohibits smoking inside any enclosed area of the airport, so you will not find any indoor landside option.
After Security
This is where IAS stands out compared to many Romanian airports. Traveler reports from 2023 and 2024 confirm smoking facilities in at least three terminals:
Terminal 2: A smoking booth is located in the main waiting area near the duty-free zone. The post-security area is described as a single large room, so the booth should be easy to spot.
Terminal 3: A smoking box is positioned right next to the "1 Minute" shop airside. This is a compact enclosed cabin, so capacity may be limited during busy periods.
Terminal 4 (New Terminal): As of May 2024, a designated smoking area is available on the left side of the terminal, next to Gate 9. This is the most recently confirmed location and appears to be a purpose-built space in the newer part of the airport.
Vaping Rules
No specific vaping policy for IAS is mentioned in available sources. Romanian airports generally treat vaping similarly to smoking in enclosed spaces, so it is safest to assume the same rules apply and use only the designated smoking areas.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting through IAS, you should be able to access the airside smoking areas in whichever terminal your gate is located. The airport is relatively compact, so walking distances are short. Check your boarding gate assignment to identify which terminal you are in before heading to the relevant smoking area.
Bottom Line
IAS is genuinely smoker-friendly airside, with confirmed smoking booths in Terminals 2, 3, and the new Terminal 4 near Gate 9. Before security, head outside the terminal to the designated outdoor areas.
