Smoking policy at Istanbul, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking inside the terminal building is prohibited under Turkish national law. Fines apply for violations. Vaping is treated the same as smoking and is restricted to designated terrace areas only. The Gate Cafe terrace can become congested during peak departure times.
Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Europe, with designated smoking terraces both before and after security. Smoking inside the terminal building is prohibited under Turkish law, but the airport has set up outdoor terrace areas that are clearly signposted and accessible without much hassle.
Before Security
Landside, smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building. Look for signposted exits near the main entrance and departure drop-off zones. There are no specific indoor smoking rooms before security.
After Security
This is where SAW genuinely stands out. There are at least two confirmed smoking terraces airside, both accessible with a valid boarding pass:
Gate Cafe Terrace (main floor): The primary and busiest airside smoking spot. After clearing security, turn right, pass under the restaurant level, and continue along the concourse until you see the Gate Cafe on your left near the far end. Look for the bilingual sign reading "Teras / Terrace" with a cafe icon. A waiter may approach you with a menu but will leave you alone if you decline. This terrace can get congested during peak hours.
Gate 306B Terrace (lower/basement level): A smaller, quieter alternative. Head downstairs to the remote lounge area and look for the terrace directly across from Gate 306B. Reported by multiple travelers as less crowded than the main terrace.
The terminal map (image index 2) confirms a "Terrace" marked near the Gate Cafe area on the main concourse level, close to gates 201-202.
Vaping Rules
Turkish regulations treat vaping similarly to smoking. Use of e-cigarettes is restricted to the same designated outdoor and terrace areas. Using a vaping device anywhere else inside the terminal may result in staff intervention.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting airside, you can access the Gate Cafe terrace or the Gate 306B terrace without going through security again, which is a real advantage over many European airports. There is no confirmed information about whether you can exit and re-enter the secure zone at SAW, so plan your smoke break before clearing security if you want to be safe.
Bottom Line
SAW offers two usable airside smoking terraces after security, free to access with a boarding pass, which puts it ahead of most European airports. Smoke before security at the outdoor landside areas, or use either terrace once you are through.
