Smoking policy at Barcelona, Barcelona Josep Tarradellas El Prat Airport (BCN)

Warnings & Caveats

Once airside, you cannot exit and re-enter without going through security again. Smoking is only permitted in the designated outdoor terrace areas; smoking elsewhere inside the terminals is prohibited under Spanish law. The landside tobacconist in T1 is only open 07:00-22:00.

Barcelona El Prat is actually one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Europe, thanks to large open-air terraces accessible after security in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The best airside smoking spots are on the outdoor terraces attached to each terminal's boarding area, and you do not need to pay for a lounge to reach them.

Before Security

Landside, smoking is only permitted outside the terminal buildings. There are no designated indoor smoking rooms before check-in.

  • Terminal 1 (T1): Head outside through any of the main entrance/exit doors on the departures level. The outdoor sidewalk and drop-off areas are your only landside option.

  • Terminal 2 (T2): Same rule applies. Step outside the building before check-in or after you collect your bags on arrival. There are no indoor landside smoking areas.

The official Aena tobacconist shop (open 07:00-22:00) is located outdoors in T1 between the arrivals area (La Plaza) and the ground-level car park, so you can stock up on cigarettes conveniently on the landside side.

After Security

This is where BCN genuinely stands out.

Terminal 1 (T1) - North and South Terraces:

Aena lists two outdoor terraces in T1's boarding area (Floor 1, North Yard and South Yard). Traveler reports consistently confirm a large open-air terrace near the Starbucks and Piscolabis restaurant. Follow signs for "Starbucks Terrace" once airside. The terrace is free to access without purchasing anything at either Starbucks or Piscolabis. Multiple travelers in 2023-2025 confirm it is spacious, has seating, and ashtrays on the tables. One traveler in June 2025 specifically noted you can smoke and enjoy a beer (cerveza) at the terrace near McDonald's in T1.

Terminal 2 (T2) - Outdoor Terrace near McDonald's/McCafe:

A large open-air terrace is located after security, to the right of McDonald's, roughly between gates R and B (or near gate S23 and McCafe). Traveler reports from 2023 through December 2025 confirm this terrace is still operational, has a bar, and offers plenty of seating. It is accessible from sub-terminals 2A, 2B, and 2C (the easyJet terminal). Signs inside T2 point to "Terrassa / Terrace" and also show a smoking symbol, making it easy to find.

Vaping Rules

No specific vaping policy is mentioned in official airport sources. Spain's general indoor public space smoking laws apply, so treat vaping the same as smoking and use the designated outdoor terraces.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting between T1 and T2, a free shuttle bus runs every 6-7 minutes (journey approx. 10 minutes). Both terminals have airside smoking terraces, so you are covered regardless of which terminal your connecting flight departs from. Bear in mind that once you pass through security, you cannot re-enter the landside area without going through security again, so plan accordingly.

Bottom Line

BCN is genuinely good for smokers: both terminals have free, open-air airside terraces with seating and bar service, no lounge membership required. Smoke outside the building before security, then head to the terrace after you clear the checkpoint.
