Smoking policy at Kuwait City, Kuwait International Airport (KWI)
Warnings & Caveats
Vaping is illegal in Kuwait nationwide. Do not bring or use e-cigarettes or vaping devices at KWI or anywhere in the country. The Terminal 5 Pearl Lounge has extremely poor ventilation and is reported to be filled with heavy smoke, making it uncomfortable for all passengers. Lounge entry at Terminal 1 requires a valid boarding pass, not just a booking confirmation.
Kuwait International Airport has a limited smoking policy: smoking is only permitted in designated areas, and your options vary significantly depending on which terminal you depart from. Airside access for smokers is patchy, and the situation has changed over the years, so read the terminal-by-terminal breakdown carefully before you fly.
Before Security
Landside smoking is restricted to designated outdoor areas outside the terminal buildings. No specific locations or signage details are documented in traveler reports, so plan to ask airport staff when you arrive curbside. There are no confirmed indoor landside smoking rooms.
After Security
Terminal 1: A smoking area has been reported post-security, rated 5/10 by travelers on InDepartures. Exact location within the terminal is not confirmed in recent reports, but a 2017 traveler noted glass smoking rooms were visible inside the terminal. The Pearl Lounge and Kuwait Airways Dasman Lounge, both in Terminal 1 international departures, have historically offered smoking access. The Pearl Lounge is accessible via Priority Pass or walk-in (check current walk-in rates at the desk); it sits on the right-hand side of the central terminal area when facing security. The Dasman Lounge is directly opposite on the left side. A third option, the Dasman Premier Lounge near Gate 26, is essentially a fenced gate area with chairs and food, also Priority Pass accessible.
Terminal 4: As of September 2022, a smoking room is available after the gate, in front of Gate B5. This is the most recently confirmed airside smoking room in the airport.
Terminal 5 (Jazeera Airways): The Pearl Lounge in Terminal 5 is the only lounge there, and a December 2024 visitor reported that the entire lounge effectively functions as a smoking area due to poor ventilation and no air conditioning. The smoke is described as overwhelming, making it difficult to stay more than 10 minutes. There are no other confirmed airside smoking areas in Terminal 5.
Lounges with Smoking Access
If you are flying from Terminal 1 and want a comfortable airside smoke, your best bet is one of the paid lounges:
Pearl Lounge (Terminal 1): Priority Pass accepted; walk-in access available (confirm current price at the entrance). Modern interior with soft seating, food buffet, showers, and luggage storage. A 4-hour time limit applies, though it is not strictly enforced.
Kuwait Airways Dasman Lounge (Terminal 1): Priority Pass accepted; 3-hour time limit. Larger and more formal-looking than Pearl, but sofas are less comfortable for long waits. Smoking access confirmed by a 2017 traveler report.
Pearl Lounge (Terminal 5): Priority Pass accepted, but the smoking situation makes it unpleasant for non-smokers and smokers alike due to lack of ventilation.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is banned in Kuwait. The country has a national prohibition on e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Do not bring or use vaping products at this airport.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting through Terminal 1, note that the Pearl Lounge requires an actual boarding pass for entry, not just a booking confirmation. One traveler in late 2024 had to argue with lounge staff for 40 minutes before being admitted without a boarding pass. Plan accordingly if you are on a complex itinerary.
Bottom Line
Smoke before security at the outdoor designated zones, or use the Terminal 4 smoking room near Gate B5 airside. If you are in Terminal 1, a Priority Pass or walk-in lounge fee gets you into the Pearl or Dasman Lounge where smoking has historically been available, but confirm on arrival as policies shift.
