Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Central Europe. Smoking is permitted both before and after security, with dedicated enclosed booths airside in both Terminal A and Terminal B, plus outdoor designated areas landside. You won't need to exit the airport entirely to find a spot once you're past the checkpoint.
Before Security
Landside, smoking is allowed in designated outdoor areas located immediately outside the main terminal building. These zones are clearly marked and easy to find as you approach or exit the terminal. Since you haven't passed security yet, you can step out and back in freely.
After Security
Once airside, you have two terminal options plus a lounge terrace:
Terminal A smoking booth (between gates A2 and A3): A small, glass-walled enclosed booth on the airside concourse. Confirmed open as recently as November 2025. Eating and drinking are forbidden inside, as posted signage makes clear.
Terminal B smoking booth (gates B1 to B3 area, directly across from gate B1): Another compact glass-and-metal enclosed booth, comfortably fitting around 4 people. Reported by a traveler in September 2023. Same rules apply: no food or drinks inside.
Business Lounge Terrace
If you're flying within the Schengen area and have access to the Business Lounge, there's a genuinely pleasant outdoor smoking terrace with tables, high chairs, and a clear view of the runway. This is a significant step up from the compact booths. Access to the Business Lounge typically requires a paid ticket or lounge membership. The exact walk-in price is not confirmed in available sources, so check directly with the lounge on arrival. This option was confirmed by a traveler in December 2023.
Vaping Rules
No specific vaping policy has been confirmed for LJU. Treat vaping the same as smoking and use the designated booths or outdoor areas to be safe.
Transit and Layovers
LJU is a compact single-terminal airport. If you're transiting between Schengen flights, the Terminal A and B booths are your airside options. Non-Schengen connections may limit your movement between zones, so plan accordingly.
Bottom Line
LJU is genuinely accommodating for smokers, with airside booths in both terminals and a nice lounge terrace if you have Business Lounge access. Just keep in mind the booths are small (max 3-4 people), so during busy periods you may have to wait a moment.
