Smoking policy at Luton, London Luton Airport (LTN)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking anywhere inside the terminal building is illegal under UK law and can result in police action and fines. Vaping and e-cigarettes are also prohibited inside the terminal; passengers have previously faced detention for using them indoors. The drop-off lanes, taxi rank, and building perimeter outside the marked zones are non-smoking even though they are outdoors. The Luton DART people mover prohibits smoking and vaping throughout the system.
London Luton is a straightforward airport for smokers to understand: there is exactly one place to smoke on the entire property, and it is outside the terminal before security. Once you clear security, that's it, there are no airside smoking facilities of any kind, no paid lounges with smoking terraces, and no workarounds.
Before Security
The airport operates sheltered designated smoking areas on the outdoor forecourt at the front of the terminal building, before the departures entrance. There are two marked zones shown on the official terminal map: one near the top of the forecourt (roughly level with the check-in hall entrance) and one further along toward the bus bays and taxi rank area. Both are covered to give some protection from rain, which is a genuine plus at a UK airport.
Walk out of the main terminal entrance toward the drop-off and pick-up lanes.
Follow the signage to the marked smoking zones on the forecourt.
No specific door numbers are published by the airport, but the areas are clearly signed.
The drop-off lanes, taxi rank, and the immediate building perimeter outside the marked zones are all non-smoking.
After Security
There is no airside smoking facility at Luton. A Hawker's Bar terrace that some travelers used informally for smoking was confirmed permanently closed as of May 2023, with no-smoking signs posted at the door. Multiple traveler reports from 2023 onward are consistent: nothing is available past security.
There are no paid airline or independent lounges at Luton that offer a smoking room or terrace, so paying for lounge access will not solve the problem.
Transit and Layovers
Luton handles almost entirely point-to-point traffic (easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, TUI), so connecting flights are rare. If you do have a layover and need to smoke, you will need to exit through arrivals, smoke at the front-of-terminal forecourt areas, and re-clear security. The compact single-terminal layout makes this workable in around 30 to 45 minutes, so it is realistic for layovers of 90 minutes or more, but tight for anything under 60 minutes.
Vaping Rules
Vaping and e-cigarettes are banned everywhere inside the terminal, matching the same rules as regular cigarettes. Heat-not-burn devices such as IQOS and glo are treated identically. The only place vaping is permitted on airport property is the same designated outdoor forecourt areas used for cigarettes. Medical inhalators (NRT inhalators, nicotine patches, nicotine gum) are explicitly permitted inside the terminal.
Luton DART
The Luton DART people mover, which opened in March 2023 and connects Luton Airport Parkway rail station to the terminal in about 3 minutes, is an enclosed public transit vehicle where smoking and vaping are prohibited throughout. If you arrive by train, smoke before boarding the DART at the station end (following National Rail no-smoking rules on platforms) or after exiting at the terminal forecourt.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you go through security, at the sheltered forecourt areas outside the main entrance. There is nothing airside, and no paid lounge will help you here.
