Smoking policy at Marseille, Marseille Provence Airport (MRS)
Warnings & Caveats
Vaping or smoking in non-designated areas inside the terminal carries a 200 euro fine. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all terminal buildings, including check-in halls, waiting lounges, boarding gates, and restrooms.
Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) has a mixed smoking situation that depends heavily on which terminal you are in and whether you have cleared security. The most reliable option for a smoke before your flight is outside the terminal building, in the designated outdoor areas landside. Airside options exist but are limited and not uniformly confirmed across all terminals.
Before Security
Smoking landside is straightforward: you step outside the terminal building to the designated outdoor smoking zones. These are the only spots where smoking is freely available to any passenger, regardless of airline or ticket class.
Designated outdoor areas are located just outside the terminal entrances.
No indoor smoking is permitted anywhere in the landside sections of the terminal.
Vaping in non-designated areas carries a 200 euro fine, so treat vaping the same as cigarette smoking and head outside.
After Security
The airside picture is more complicated, and reports from travelers are not entirely consistent.
A July 2024 traveler report confirms a smoking area in the zone leading to Gates 10 to 18, accessible after security and after passport control. The photo (image 1) shows a signed "Espace Fumeur" area in this part of the terminal, with a directional arrow pointing downward toward the smoking zone.
Separate reports mention a total of three smoking areas across the airport: one in Hall 1 and two in Hall 4. However, these have not been independently verified with the same recency as the Gates 10-18 report.
One source (airportsmokinglounge.com) states there are no smoking areas inside the airport after security, which directly contradicts the traveler report above. This inconsistency likely reflects changes over time or differences between terminals.
There is no confirmed paid lounge at MRS that offers a dedicated smoking room or terrace.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is treated the same as smoking at MRS. Using an e-cigarette inside the terminal building or in any non-designated area can result in a 200 euro fine. Stick to the outdoor designated zones or the confirmed airside smoking area near Gates 10-18.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting through MRS and your connection keeps you airside, your best bet is the smoking area near Gates 10-18, assuming it remains operational. There is no confirmed re-entry option if you exit to smoke landside, so plan accordingly before clearing security.
Bottom Line
Smoke outside before you go through security to be safe. If you are airside near Gates 10-18, there is a confirmed smoking area as of mid-2024, but reports for other parts of the terminal are inconsistent.
