Smoking policy at Minneapolis, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)

Warnings & Caveats

Cannabis smoking and vaping is illegal on all MSP airport grounds and can result in fines. Violating the indoor smoke-free policy can result in fines and penalties under Minnesota law. After using any outdoor smoking area, you must pass through security screening again before re-entering the terminal. Allow at least 20-30 minutes for re-entry.

MSP is a fully smoke-free facility indoors, but smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas located at least 45 feet from terminal entrances. There are no smoking rooms, lounges, or any airside options at either terminal. If you need to smoke after clearing security, you must exit the building entirely, use one of the outdoor zones, and then go back through security screening.

Before Security

Both Terminal 1 (Lindbergh) and Terminal 2 (Humphrey) have outdoor smoking zones accessible from the Arrivals and Departures levels. All spots are curbside or near terminal doors, marked with blue "Smoking Area" signage. There are 9 designated zones in total across both terminals.

Terminal 1 (Lindbergh) smoking locations:

  • Level 1 (Arrivals): Near Doors 1 and 2, near Doors 3 and 4, near North Curbside, near South Curbside

  • Level 2 (Departures): Near North of Door 4, near Doors 1 and 2, near Curbside (two separate spots)

  • A covered smoking shelter with a bench is available at the Arrivals level near Door 4

Terminal 2 (Humphrey) smoking locations:

  • Level 1 (Arrivals): One curbside smoking zone outside the terminal

Smoking is also permitted in the parking ramps at both terminals, as long as you stay at least 20 feet from any entrance. Terminal 1 ramps include green, gold, blue, red, pink, and brown; Terminal 2 has the Orange Ramp.

After Security

There are zero airside smoking options at MSP. No smoking rooms, no paid lounges with smoking areas, nothing past the security checkpoints in either terminal. If you are already through security and need to smoke, you must exit the secure zone, go outside to a designated area, and re-clear security before your flight.

Vaping Rules

Vaping follows the same rules as cigarette smoking: banned entirely indoors, permitted only in the outdoor designated smoking zones. Cannabis, whether smoked or vaped, is illegal on all airport grounds and carries fines under Minnesota law.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting through MSP on a domestic itinerary, you can exit security to smoke and re-enter. For international arrivals connecting onward, you must clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection first, then exit to a smoking zone before re-clearing security for your next flight. Budget at least 45 minutes to smoke and get back through screening comfortably.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you enter the terminal or before you clear security; once you are airside at MSP, there is no way to smoke without exiting the building and going back through the checkpoint.
