Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauss (MUC)

Munich Airport is one of the most smoker-friendly major hubs in Europe, with designated smoking rooms and lounges available in virtually every gate concourse after security in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Smoking is banned throughout the general terminal buildings, but the airport has invested in a network of enclosed, ventilated smoking cabins and branded lounges airside, so you rarely have to walk far from your gate.

Before Security

Landside options are limited to outdoor areas only. You can smoke:

• Outside the entrance and exit doors of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (look for the designated spots immediately in front of the terminal facades)

• At the outdoor area of the Munich Airport Center (MAC), the large shopping and dining plaza between the two terminals

There is no indoor smoking permitted in the landside areas. Once you check in, head through security as soon as you can, because the airside options are far better.

After Security

This is where Munich really stands out. Both terminals have multiple enclosed smoking rooms and Camel-branded smoking lounges scattered through every concourse. All are free to enter with a valid boarding pass.

Terminal 1 has smoking areas in Modules A, B, C, D, and F:

• Module A: Two smoking rooms, one near Gate A9 (next to the Bruschetteria restaurant) and one across from Gate A33

• Module B: One smoking room next to Gate B2

• Module C: One next to Gate C2, and one in the C-pier across from Gate C23. Note: as of September 2024, the C02 lounge was under renovation; travelers were directed to C28 instead

• Module D: One smoking cabin next to Gate D2. A February 2025 traveler report confirmed the Camel smoking cabin next to Gate D02 is open

• Level 5 of Terminal 1: One smoking room next to the Air France KLM Lounge

Terminal 2 (Gates G and H) has several smoking lounges on the main concourse:

• G gates (Schengen): Camel Smoking Lounges between G6-G7, next to G13, between G36-G37, next to G45, and between G62-G72. A large smoking kiosk was confirmed between G36-G37 in October 2023

• H gates (non-Schengen): Smoking areas between H6-H7, between H18-H20, across from H32, and across from H46. A small smoking lounge near H2 serves passengers on USA-bound flights

Terminal 2 Satellite (K and L Gates)

The satellite terminal, reached via an underground link, also has smoking areas:

• K gates (Schengen): Camel Smoking Zones next to Gate K11 and Gate K23

• L gates (non-Schengen): Smoking rooms across from Gate L15 (next to Sissi and Franz restaurant), between L23-L24, and next to L11

Smoking Rooms and Branded Cabins

Most of the airside smoking spots are either Camel Smoking Lounges (larger, glass-walled enclosed rooms with seating and ventilation) or Winston Smoking Zones (smaller enclosed kiosks with a standing counter and ashtray). Both are free to use with a boarding pass. The Camel lounges tend to be more spacious; the Winston kiosks are compact but functional. No purchase is required to enter either type.

Vaping Rules

The official airport website does not specifically address vaping. Given that smoking is banned in general terminal areas, it is safest to treat vaping the same as smoking and use only the designated smoking rooms.

Transit and Layovers

If you are connecting between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, note that you cannot exit and re-enter the secure area without going through security again. Plan your smoke stop within the terminal you are departing from.

Bottom Line

Munich is genuinely one of the best airports in Europe for smokers: free, enclosed smoking rooms are available at or near almost every gate in both terminals, so you can get a smoke in right up until boarding without any lounge membership or extra cost.
