Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Newark Liberty International Airport is entirely smoke-free indoors, and that rule applies to every terminal, gate, lounge, corridor, and parking garage. The only places you can smoke are the 10 designated outdoor areas spread across Terminals A, B, and C, all located before security and at least 25 feet from any entrance or exit. There are zero airside smoking options, no indoor smoking rooms, and no smoking lounges of any kind.

Before Security

All smoking at EWR happens outside the terminal buildings, landside. Each terminal has its own set of designated spots:

• Terminal A: Roughly 3 outdoor designated areas at both the arrivals level (ground floor) and the departures level (upper floor). Look for marked signage at least 25 feet from the entrance doors.

• Terminal B: The most smoking-friendly terminal by sheer number of spots, with approximately 4 designated areas. Specific documented locations include the Departures Level and Level 3 near Check-In at Doors 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8. Signage guides you to each approved spot.

• Terminal C: Roughly 3 outdoor designated areas at the arrivals and departures levels. The Level 1 curbside area near arrivals is the easiest to find after rechecking bags on an international connection. If you are departing from Terminal C in the evening (when most Europe-bound flights leave), security queues are often only 5 to 10 minutes, so a quick smoke before entering is realistic.

After Security

There are no smoking areas past any TSA checkpoint at EWR. Concourses C1, C2, and C3 are entirely smoke-free, as are all gate areas in Terminals A and B. The United Polaris Lounge and all other premium lounges in Terminal C prohibit smoking. If you need to smoke during a layover, you must exit the secure area entirely, find an outdoor designated spot, and go back through TSA screening.

Re-entry and Timing

Re-entering security after a smoke can take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes during off-peak hours, and 30 to 60 or more minutes during peak periods (roughly 6 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM). Terminal C is particularly known for long queues because of the volume of United flights. Budget at least 30 to 40 minutes if you plan to step out during a connection.

For international arrivals clearing customs in Terminal B or C, you will already be on the landside after exiting the Federal Inspection Services area, so you can step outside to smoke before re-entering security for a connecting flight without any extra detour.

Vaping Rules

E-cigarettes, vape pens, heated tobacco products, and all electronic nicotine delivery devices are treated exactly the same as traditional cigarettes under New Jersey's Smoke-Free Air Act. They are banned inside all terminal buildings. You must use the same designated outdoor areas.

Bottom Line

Smoke outside before you clear security, because once you are airside there is absolutely nothing available. If you have a tight connection, stepping out for a smoke is not realistic during peak hours.
