Queen Alia International Airport has a complicated and shifting smoking situation. Airside smoking rooms have opened and closed repeatedly over the past few years, so what you find on arrival may differ from what was reported even a few months earlier. The safest plan is to smoke outside before clearing security, then rely on lounge access if you need to smoke after the checkpoint.
Before Security
Smoking before security is straightforward: step outside the terminal building. There are no designated indoor landside smoking rooms reported, so you'll need to exit through the main doors before check-in or before joining the security queue. This is the most reliable option at AMM regardless of what's happening airside.
After Security
The airside picture is genuinely confusing because reports from different travelers contradict each other:
July 2023 (official statement): The airport announced that smoking rooms were closed in compliance with government safety measures.
October 2023 (traveler report): A smoking area was found near gates 11-14.
July 2023 (traveler report): A smoking room was located near gate 130, to the left and behind duty free. Described as not well signposted.
February 2023: A smoking area was reported near gate 226.
2022 reports: Multiple travelers found all standalone smoking rooms closed, with the only airside option being the paid lounges.
Given these conflicting reports, treat any standalone airside smoking room as potentially closed and plan accordingly.
Lounge Access for Airside Smoking
Two lounges in the terminal have confirmed smoking facilities:
Crown Lounge: Has two smoking areas inside. Walk-in access is available if space permits, reportedly around 40 euros as of June 2022. Also accessible with Priority Pass and similar lounge memberships, or business class boarding passes.
Petra Lounge: Also reported to have a private smoking room. Access is reserved for business class travelers or lounge pass holders (Priority Pass, etc.). Walk-in purchase availability is less clearly documented.
If you're traveling economy and don't hold a lounge membership, the Crown Lounge walk-in fee is your most reliable airside smoking option when standalone rooms are closed.
Vaping
No specific vaping policy for AMM has been reported in available sources. Jordan's general indoor smoking restrictions would likely apply, so treat vaping the same as cigarette smoking and use designated areas only.
Transit and Layovers
If you're transiting through AMM without clearing customs, you'll be airside the entire time. Given the uncertainty around standalone smoking rooms, budget time to check whether the rooms near gates 11-14, 130, or 226 are currently open, or head to the Crown Lounge if you need a guaranteed option.
Bottom Line
Smoke outside before security for a guaranteed option. Airside, the Crown Lounge (around 40 euros walk-in, or free with Priority Pass) is the most dependable fallback, since standalone smoking rooms have been repeatedly reported as closed despite occasional traveler sightings.
