Smoking in non-designated areas inside the terminal is illegal under Italian law and can result in fines. Electronic cigarettes and vaping devices are also banned in enclosed public spaces, including all indoor terminal areas. Once airside, you cannot exit to the landside outdoor smoking area and re-enter without going through security again.
Rome Ciampino (CIA) is a compact, low-cost-focused airport with a limited but real set of smoking options. Smoking is banned inside the terminal building, but designated areas exist both outside before security and in the airside gate zones after security. If you smoke, plan your last cigarette before entering the terminal or budget a few minutes at the airside booth near Gates A and B.
Before Security
Landside smoking is only permitted in the designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building. These spots are clearly marked and equipped with ashtrays. There are no indoor smoking rooms on the landside, so you will need to step fully outside. If you are being dropped off or are waiting for check-in to open, this is your best window to smoke freely.

After Security
Ciampino does have at least one signposted smoking area airside, in the vicinity of Gates A and B. Because Gates A and B are very close together in this small terminal, the smoking booth effectively serves both gate areas. Traveler reports from 2021 confirm the area was open and in use. An earlier 2017 report from one traveler suggested no airside smoking was available, but multiple subsequent reports from 2018 and 2021 confirm the booth exists, so treat the older negative report as outdated.

Vaping Rules
Italian law bans electronic cigarettes in all enclosed public spaces, including airport terminals. Vaping is treated the same as smoking: only permitted in the same designated outdoor or airside smoking areas, not freely throughout the terminal.
Transit and Layovers
Ciampino does not operate as a major transit hub. If you have a layover here, once you pass security you cannot exit and re-enter the airside zone to use the outdoor landside smoking area, so the airside booth near Gates A and B is your only option.
