Smoking policy at San Francisco, San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking or vaping inside any SFO terminal, lounge, restroom, restaurant, or AirTrain station is prohibited under California law and San Francisco local ordinance. Fines and penalties apply. Smoking within 25 feet of any terminal entrance or exit is also prohibited. No indoor smoking rooms or lounges exist anywhere at SFO. Exiting security to smoke during a layover means re-clearing TSA, which can take 30-45 minutes at peak times.

SFO is a fully smoke-free indoor airport, and there are zero smoking areas past any TSA security checkpoint in any terminal. All smoking and vaping is restricted to designated outdoor zones at least 25 feet from terminal entrances, and these spots are landside only. If you have already cleared security and need a cigarette, you must exit the secure area entirely, smoke outside, and re-clear TSA from scratch.

Before Security

Each of SFO's four terminals has outdoor designated smoking zones on the curbside. All are open 24/7 and marked with posted signage and standing ashtrays.

  • Terminal 1 (Southwest, JetBlue): Curbside zones at Departures Level 2 (ticketing) and Arrivals Level 1 (baggage claim). The arrivals-level spot tends to be less crowded.

  • Terminal 2 (United domestic): Curbside zones at both the north and south ends of Departures Level 2. The terminal is long, so pick whichever end is closest to your drop-off point.

  • Terminal 3 (United hub): Curbside zones at Departures Level 2 and Arrivals Level 1. A well-known spot is outside near Door 7 on the arrivals level, which has a small seating area and ashtrays and sits slightly away from the main traffic flow.

  • International Terminal (ITB): The most options of any terminal. Departures Level 3 near Door 1 (south end) and Door 16 (north end) both have standing ashtrays. Arrivals Level 1 near Doors 1 and 2 work well right after clearing customs. The Door 5 area (international arrivals side) has a bench and a pole-mounted ashtray, making it one of the more comfortable spots before heading to ground transportation. A smaller sitting area with a pole-tray ashtray is also at Door 13 on the domestic side of the ITB.

After Security

There are no smoking areas, smoking rooms, or smoking lounges anywhere past the TSA checkpoint in any SFO terminal. No airline lounge at SFO offers a smoking room or smoking terrace. Once you are airside, your only option is to exit the secure area completely.

During peak hours, the round trip out and back through TSA can take 30 to 45 minutes. If you have a tight connection, it is not worth the risk. Passengers connecting between Terminal 3 and the International Terminal via the airside connector do not need to re-clear security for that specific path, but there are no smoking areas anywhere along that route either.

Vaping Rules

E-cigarettes, vape pens, and all electronic nicotine delivery devices are treated identically to traditional cigarettes at SFO. They are banned inside all terminals, gate areas, restaurants, airline lounges, and on the AirTrain. San Francisco's local vaping ordinance reinforces California state law, and fines can apply for violations indoors or in non-designated outdoor areas.

Transit and Layovers

If you have a layover and want to smoke, budget serious time. Exiting security, walking to the nearest outdoor zone, smoking, and re-clearing TSA is realistically a 30 to 45 minute exercise during busy periods. The free AirTrain connects all terminals if you need to reach a specific outdoor zone, but you must be landside to use it for this purpose.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you clear security, at one of the clearly marked outdoor curbside zones at your terminal. Once you are airside at SFO, there is no way to smoke until you leave the building entirely.
