Smoking policy at Seattle, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking is prohibited inside all terminals, parking garages, upper and lower airport drives (except designated zones), and all airfield locations. Violating smoking rules can result in fines or removal from airport property. Cannabis is prohibited on all airport property under federal law, regardless of Washington State legalization. No re-entry to the secure area is possible without going through TSA again, so exiting to smoke during a layover requires 45-60 minutes minimum.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is a completely smoke-free facility indoors, with smoking permitted only at a small number of designated outdoor areas located landside, before TSA security. There are zero smoking options once you clear security, so plan your last smoke break before you enter the checkpoint.

Before Security

SEA maintains a handful of outdoor smoking zones on the lower drive level, accessible from the main terminal. Based on the most consistent reports across sources, the confirmed locations are:

  • Near Door 5: On the departures level, outside the main terminal near the check-in and concourse entrances.

  • Near Door 00: On the arrivals level, outside baggage claim at the south end of the lower drive.

  • Near Door 33: Also referenced in recent traveler reports as an active outdoor smoking spot on the departures level.

The airport's official page confirms smoking is only allowed at outdoor locations on the lower drive, at the north and south ends. Use the interactive map at maps.flysea.org to get step-by-step walking directions to the nearest zone from wherever you are in the terminal, as the exact door numbering can be confusing on your first visit.

After Security

There are no smoking areas, smoking rooms, or smoking lounges airside at SEA. No concourse, gate area, or airline lounge at Sea-Tac offers a designated smoking space. This applies to all gates, including international departures.

Vaping Rules

Vaping and e-cigarettes are treated identically to traditional smoking under SEA's policy and Washington State's Clean Indoor Air Act. Vaping is prohibited everywhere inside the terminal, including all concourses, lounges, restaurants, and gate areas. Outdoor vaping is permitted only in the same designated smoking zones listed above. Keep your device in your carry-on and do not use it anywhere inside the building.

Transit and Connecting Flights

If you have a layover at SEA and want to smoke, you must exit the secure area entirely, walk to one of the outdoor smoking zones, and then re-clear TSA security. Allow at least 45 to 60 minutes for this round trip, depending on TSA wait times. International transit passengers connecting through SEA must enter the United States, clear customs, smoke outside, and then re-enter security for their onward flight.

Cannabis

Despite recreational marijuana being legal in Washington State, cannabis is strictly prohibited on all airport property under federal law. This includes smoking, vaping, and edibles. Violations can result in confiscation or fines.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you go through security, full stop. Head to Door 5 (departures) or Door 00 (arrivals/baggage claim), and use the airport's interactive map to navigate there. Once airside, there is no way to smoke at SEA.
