Smoking areas at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is not very accommodating to smokers. All of the airport's designated smoking rooms in the terminal building have been reported as being closed, so there is no area for smoking past the security checkpoint for domestic or international flights.

Smoking is only permitted outside of the terminal buildings in the designated outdoor smoking areas, pre-security. Please ensure that you smoke in the smoking area before entering the terminal flow, checking in or passing through security.

Before Security

Smoking areas are located outside the terminal buildings, pre-security.

These are the only smoking areas at SZX. Signs mark their locations near the terminal's entrances and exits. Don't smoke in areas where smoking is not allowed.

After Security

There are no smoking areas after security at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport.

Once past security, it is unlikely that you will find anywhere to smoke, other than when outside. There are no smoking rooms before domestic gates, international gates, lounges, toilets, restaurants and transfer areas.

Connections and Transit

For smokers, it is inconvenient to connect at SZX.

If you are connecting and wish to smoke, you may need to enter China, exit the transit area, step outside, use designated smoking lounges, then clear security again to board your next flight.

This can take some time, and if your wait is short, it is usually not worth leaving the secure area just to smoke.

Vaping at SZX

Vaping should be treated the same as smoking at Shenzhen Airport.

There is a ban on vaping in the terminal, including after security control, near gates, toilets, restaurants, lounges and transfer areas. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas unless otherwise specified by airport staff.

Practical Advice

At SZX, you are only permitted to smoke outside of the terminal building, before passing airport security or after leaving.

If you are departing, smoke before entering the secured area of the airport. If you are in transit, do not exit airside unless you have sufficient time to enter China, leave airside, clear security, and re-enter airside.
