Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)

Toronto Pearson International Airport is entirely smoke-free and vape-free inside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. The only place you can smoke is in one of 10 designated outdoor areas located on the curbside levels of both terminals, well away from building entrances. There are no indoor smoking rooms, no airside smoking facilities, and no exceptions for e-cigarettes or vaping devices inside the buildings.

Before Security

Your only option is to step outside to one of the designated outdoor smoking zones before you check in or after you land. These areas are spread across all curbside levels of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. You can spot them by the signage posted on columns and marked on the ground pavement.

• Look for columns marked with a green "Smoking Area / Zone fumeurs" sign (as shown in the curbside photos).

• Image 0 shows a column at the Terminal 1 departures level indicating smoking areas at columns 1 and 23.

• The zones are set a required distance from building entrances, exits, and loading areas, so you may need to walk a short distance along the curb to reach one.

• Cannabis smoking or vaping is strictly prohibited everywhere on airport grounds, including these outdoor zones.

After Security

There are no smoking facilities of any kind airside at Pearson. Once you clear security, you cannot smoke until you exit the secure zone. If you are on a connecting international flight and need to smoke, you must clear Canadian customs, exit the terminal to a designated outdoor area, and then re-clear security to reach your departure gate. Factor in significant extra time if you plan to do this on a connection.

Vaping Rules

Vaping and e-cigarettes are treated the same as smoking at Pearson. They are not permitted anywhere inside the terminal buildings, and vaping is also banned in the outdoor designated smoking zones. In practice, the outdoor smoking areas are your only realistic option, and even there, vaping rules may be enforced by public safety officers.

Transit and Layovers

If you are transiting through YYZ on an international-to-international connection, be aware that smoking outside means entering Canada, going through customs, stepping out to a curbside smoking zone, and then re-clearing security. This can easily take 45 to 60 minutes or more depending on queue times. Plan your layover accordingly.

Enforcement

Pearson's public safety officers and curbside staff actively enforce the smoking policy. Anyone caught smoking outside a designated zone will be told to stop immediately and directed to the nearest smoking area. Violations can result in warnings, fines, or in serious cases, denial of boarding.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you enter the terminal or immediately after you exit on the curbside level. Once you are past security, there is no way to smoke until your flight lands and you leave the building.
