Warnings & Caveats

Nepal has a national vaping ban. E-cigarettes and vaping devices will be confiscated. Lighter confiscation at security has been reported, though enforcement appears inconsistent. Do not count on keeping your lighter. No duty-free shop inside TIA. Buy cigarettes in Kathmandu city before arriving at the airport.

Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) does permit smoking, but only in designated spots, and the facilities are basic compared to larger regional hubs. Smoking is allowed in specific areas both before and after security, though the options are limited and the quality of the facilities has drawn mixed feedback from travelers.

Before Security

Landside, there is a smoking corner located in a cafe to the left of the main terminal entrance. It is described as a basic smokers corner in the far corner of that cafe, not a purpose-built enclosed room. Convenience varies depending on how busy the terminal is, and you may need to allow extra time if your flight is soon.

  • The domestic terminal also has a designated smoking area outside the main building. Traveler reports rate it poorly for comfort, and you will need to step outside to use it, which can be inconvenient during bad weather or if you are short on time.

  • There is no duty-free shop inside TIA, so buy cigarettes in Kathmandu city before you arrive.

After Security

A smoking facility exists airside, past immigration and security in the international departures area. According to a traveler update from February 2024, it is located at the far left side of the departure hall when facing the departure gates, in the area with several bus gates used for boarding. The setup is functional but not luxurious.

Vaping Rules

Nepal has a vaping ban in place. E-cigarettes and vaping devices are not permitted, so do not bring them into the country or attempt to use them at the airport.

Lighters

One traveler reported having a lighter confiscated at security while a colleague's was not, suggesting inconsistent enforcement. Do not rely on bringing your own lighter through security.

Bottom Line

Smoking is possible both before and after security at TIA, but the facilities are basic and reports suggest they are not particularly comfortable. Buy cigarettes in town, leave your lighter at home, and locate the far-left corner of the departure hall once you are through security.
