Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

YVR has a strict no-smoking policy inside all terminal buildings. The only way to smoke at Vancouver International Airport is to go outside to the designated areas in front of the terminal buildings, and there are no airside smoking facilities whatsoever. If you need a cigarette after clearing security, you are out of luck unless you are willing to exit the secure zone, smoke outside, and go through security screening again.

Before Security

Smoking is permitted only in marked outdoor designated zones outside the terminal buildings. These are landside areas, meaning you must be before security (or exit after security) to use them. The airport does not publish a detailed map of exactly where these zones are on its main website, but they are described as being in marked areas outside the terminal entrances.

• Look for signage near the terminal entrance/exit doors indicating the designated smoking zone.

• Smoking, vaping, and cannabis are all covered by the same outdoor-only rule: none are permitted inside the buildings.

• Keep in mind that British Columbia rules require smokers to stay at least 7.5 metres from doorways, so you may need to walk a short distance from the entrance before lighting up.

After Security

There are no smoking facilities airside at YVR. No smoking rooms, no smoking lounges, and no airline lounge with a smoking area has been confirmed at this airport. Once you pass through security, your only option is to exit the secure zone, smoke in the outdoor designated area landside, and then re-enter through security screening. This is confirmed possible but adds significant time, so budget at least 30-45 minutes to account for re-screening queues, especially during peak hours.

Connecting Passengers

If you are connecting through YVR on an international itinerary, this is particularly important: you must clear Canadian customs and immigration, exit the terminal to the outdoor smoking area, and then re-clear security for your onward flight. This is a real time commitment. If your layover is short, it may simply not be feasible.

Vaping Rules

Vaping is treated the same as smoking at YVR: not permitted inside the terminal buildings. Use the same outdoor designated zones. Cannabis vaping falls under the same restrictions. Be aware that British Columbia public health rules apply on airport property.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you enter the terminal or budget time to exit and re-enter through security. There are no airside options at all, paid lounge or otherwise.
