İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB)

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Turkey, with designated smoking terraces ("teras") available airside in both the Domestic and International terminals. Smoking inside the terminal buildings is banned under Turkish law, but the airport has carved out enclosed glass courtyards and outdoor terrace areas specifically for smokers, so you won't be left hunting for a doorway.

Before Security

Landside options are limited to outdoor areas outside the terminal buildings.

• Domestic Terminal: Smoking is only permitted in designated areas outside the terminal before you pass through the first bag control.

• International Terminal: After the initial bag check but before passport control, there is a courtyard on the right side of the International departures area where you can smoke. This is your last free-access option before going airside.

After Security

Domestic Terminal (airside)

This is where ADB really delivers for smokers. There are three smoking terraces after the domestic security checkpoint:

1. Teras near Gate 236 (left of the security checkpoint): A glass-enclosed terrace with a cafe inside serving snacks and drinks.

2. Teras near Gate 238 (right of the security checkpoint): Same format, glass-walled structure with a cafe. This is the most photographed of the three and clearly signed as "Teras."

3. CIP Floor Smoking Area (next to the CIP security checkpoint, opposite the Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge): This courtyard is accessible to Turkish Airlines business class passengers and Star Alliance Gold card holders only. It is not open to general passengers.

International Terminal (airside)

There is one confirmed smoking area after passport control and the second bag check:

• Courtyard near Gate 233: Walk through the duty-free shop, turn right, and you'll find a small glass-walled courtyard beside Gate 233, accessible through the Efe Kiosk / Cakes and Bakes coffee shop area. Multiple travelers describe it as compact and smoky but functional. It has been consistently reported since at least 2018.

Lounges

Neither the Primeclass Lounge (Domestic, between Gates 238-239, accessible via Priority Pass or TAV Passport) nor the Primeclass Lounge (International, above the duty-free area near Gate 229, same access) are listed as smoking-permitted spaces. Both are explicitly described as non-smoking. The Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge (Domestic, opposite Gate 240, ground floor) is accessible to Turkish Airlines business class, Miles and Smiles Elite/Classic Plus, and Star Alliance Gold members, and has an adjacent smoking courtyard on the CIP floor.

Vaping Rules

No specific vaping policy for ADB is mentioned in available sources. Turkish law generally treats e-cigarettes similarly to tobacco in public spaces, so assume vaping is restricted to the same designated smoking areas unless signage indicates otherwise.
