Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)

Düsseldorf Airport is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Western Europe. Smoking is banned inside the main terminal building, but dedicated smoking lounges are available post-security in all three piers (A, B, and C), so you have real airside options once you clear security. Landside, you're limited to outdoor designated areas at the terminal entrances and exits.

Before Security

Once you're in the public landside area, smoking inside the terminal building is not permitted. Your only option before security is to step outside to the designated smoking spots at the entrance and exit areas of the terminal. These are standard outdoor curbside zones, not enclosed rooms.

If you need a smoke before heading through security, plan to do it at the curbside areas before you enter the building, or after you clear security in one of the pier lounges.

After Security

This is where DUS genuinely delivers for smokers. Each of the three piers has at least one dedicated smoking lounge, all free to enter and accessible to any passenger who has cleared security. No lounge membership or paid access is required.

Pier A (Terminal A):

• Smoking area located at the far end of the pier, near Gate A63. Confirmed by traveler reports as recently as August 2022.

Pier B (Terminal B):

• A large smoking lounge is located directly across from Gates B55/B56. Confirmed with photo by a traveler in April 2022 as a spacious, comfortable room.

• A second Camel-branded smoking lounge is reported near Gate B26.

• A third smoking room (also Camel-branded) was reported near Gates B57/B58, described as a big, comfortable room.

Pier C (Terminal C):

• A large smoking room is located near Gate C32. This pier handles flights departing the European Union. Confirmed by a traveler in June 2022.

Vaping Rules

Vaping is legal in Germany and most airports, including DUS, treat e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn devices (such as IQOS) the same as conventional cigarettes. You should use the designated smoking lounges for vaping as well. Some flexibility may exist in certain areas, but using the marked smoking rooms is the safest approach to avoid any issues.

Transit and Layovers

If you're transiting through DUS, the post-security smoking lounges in each pier mean you can smoke during your layover without re-clearing security. The SkyTrain connects the terminal areas, but the lounges are distributed across all three piers so you likely won't need to travel far from your gate.

Bottom Line

DUS is a solid airport for smokers: free, accessible smoking lounges in all three airside piers mean you're never far from a designated spot after security. Before security, you're outdoors only at the terminal entrances.
