Smoking policy at Aktau, Aktau International Airport (SCO)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is only permitted in the two designated areas on the 2nd floor departure halls. Smoking outside these zones may result in a fine under Kazakhstani law.
Aktau International Airport (SCO) has designated smoking areas inside the terminal, so you are not left hunting for a spot outside. The airport's own services page confirms two smoking areas, both on the 2nd floor: one in the domestic departure hall opposite the cafe, and one in the international departure hall near Duty Free. Smoking anywhere outside these zones is not permitted.
Before Security
There is no landside (before security) smoking area listed on the airport's official services page. Both confirmed smoking areas are located in the departure halls on the 2nd floor, which are accessed after check-in and security screening. If you need a cigarette before going through security, your only realistic option is to step outside the terminal building entirely.
After Security
Two smoking areas are confirmed airside on the 2nd floor:
Domestic departure hall: Located opposite the cafe on the 2nd floor. This is the spot to use if you are flying a domestic route within Kazakhstan.
International departure hall: Located near Duty Free on the 2nd floor. Convenient for international passengers waiting to board.
Both areas appear to be enclosed or semi-enclosed designated zones within the terminal, based on the airport's own description and the photo of the glass-fronted smoking area visible in the services imagery.
Vaping
The airport's official materials do not specifically address e-cigarettes or heated tobacco products. Kazakhstan has introduced restrictions on vaping in public spaces, so treat your device the same as a cigarette and use only the designated smoking areas to avoid any issues.
Transit and Layovers
Aktau is a relatively compact single-terminal airport, so both smoking areas on the 2nd floor are within easy walking distance of each other. If you are transiting between a domestic and an international flight, note that the two areas are in separate departure halls, so use whichever corresponds to your current airside zone.
Bottom Line
Smoke airside on the 2nd floor: domestic side opposite the cafe, or international side near Duty Free. There is no confirmed landside smoking area, so clear security before lighting up.
