Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

CMB is a reasonably smoker-friendly airport by Asian standards, with a confirmed airside smoking room that has been reported open consistently from 2022 through late 2025. The main facility is inside the Flemingo Duty Free shop on the airside departure level, accessible after clearing immigration and passport control. Vaping is completely off the table: Sri Lanka has banned e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and vapes since 2016, covering import, sale, and possession, so leave any vaping device at home.

Before Security

Landside options are minimal. Arriving passengers and anyone who has not yet cleared immigration can use:

• Outdoor areas near the terminal entrance: Limited open-air spots outside the terminal building. No dedicated enclosed room exists landside, so you are essentially stepping outside the building.

If you are departing, plan to smoke before you enter the terminal or immediately outside the entrance, then head airside as soon as you clear passport control.

After Security

This is where CMB actually delivers for smokers. Two confirmed airside spots exist:

1. Smoking Room inside Flemingo Duty Free (primary option): After clearing immigration, walk into the duty-free zone and look for the overhead "SMOKING ROOM" directional sign pointing left inside the Flemingo shop. Multiple traveler reports from 2022 through November 2025 confirm this room is still open. It is an enclosed room, free to use, and open to all departing and transit passengers with a valid boarding pass.

1. Smoking Area near the Serendib Lounge (first floor): Take the escalator near the Flemingo Duty Free, turn left, and walk roughly 20 meters. This second spot sits adjacent to the SriLankan Airlines Serendib Lounge on the first floor. Note that the Serendib Lounge itself is entirely non-smoking, as are all other lounges at CMB including the Palm Strip Lounge. The smoking area here is a separate, standalone facility, not inside the lounge.

Lounge Access and Smoking

All airport lounges at CMB (Serendib, Palm Strip, and others) are non-smoking inside. You do not need to pay for lounge access to use the smoking areas: both airside spots are free and open to any passenger who has cleared immigration.

Vaping Rules

Sri Lanka's ban on e-cigarettes and vaping devices is one of the strictest in Asia. Import, sale, and possession have all been illegal since 2016 under national law. Do not bring a vape, pod device, or heated tobacco product into the country or through the airport. The designated smoking rooms are for cigarettes only.

Transit and Layovers

Transit passengers clearing through CMB can access the Flemingo Duty Free smoking room on the airside departure level. CMB currently operates from a single terminal, so there is no confusion about which building to head to. A new Terminal 2 is under construction (JICA-funded, expected to open around 2027-2028), but smoking facilities remain unchanged for now.

Bottom Line

Head airside as soon as you clear passport control and follow the "SMOKING ROOM" signs inside Flemingo Duty Free. Leave any vaping device at home.
