Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)

Beijing Capital International Airport is one of the least smoker-friendly major hubs in Asia. All smoking is restricted to outdoor designated areas before security only, there are zero smoking rooms or airside smoking areas anywhere in the international terminals once you pass the security checkpoint.

Before Security

Your only realistic options are the outdoor designated zones on the landside (public) side of the terminals:

• Entrance 12 area: The most consistently reported spot is outside the arrivals hall near Entrance 12. As of August 2025, there is a clearly marked designated smoking zone here with ashtrays and a defined area. This is the easiest spot to find if you are arriving or departing from the main terminal building.

• Domestic side, Gates 1, 5, and 7: On the domestic side of the airport, outdoor smoking areas with pole ashtrays and bench seating are located outside near these gate entrances. Travelers report that only the Gate 7 area is reliably open 24 hours; the others may have restricted access depending on the time of day.

• General curbside areas near terminal exits on both the arrivals and departures levels also have outdoor zones, though the marked spots near Entrance 12 and the domestic gates are the most clearly designated.

After Security

There is no smoking anywhere after security at PEK, full stop. This applies to all terminals, including the international T3 designed by Norman Foster. There are no smoking rooms, no airside lounges with smoking facilities, and no outdoor terraces past the checkpoints.

If you are an international transit passenger who needs to smoke during a layover, your only option is to exit the secure zone, go through immigration into China, walk to a landside smoking area, and then re-clear security and immigration to reach your gate. This process typically takes well over an hour and is only realistic on layovers of three hours or more. Many travelers report it is simply not worth attempting.

Lighters

Security at PEK is strict about lighters. As of August 2025, updated reports confirm that security now requires lighters to be taken out of bags during screening, and they are routinely confiscated. Do not bring an expensive or sentimental lighter. Some travelers note that other smokers at the outdoor areas outside the terminal sometimes leave spare lighters on the ashtrays for arriving passengers, since selling lighters near the terminal is also reportedly banned.

Vaping

Vaping is technically subject to the same rules as smoking and should only be done in designated outdoor areas. In practice, some travelers have reported seeing people vape inside the terminal without staff intervention, but this is inconsistently enforced and you should not rely on it. China's state vape regulations since November 2022 restrict legal vapes to tobacco-flavour only. Treat vaping the same as smoking and use the outdoor zones.

Transit and Layovers

PEK is a genuinely difficult airport for smokers on transit. Exiting to smoke requires entering China, which means going through immigration, and some travelers have reported being denied entry despite holding passports from visa-free nations. Do not count on PEK as a transit-friendly airport for smokers.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you enter the terminal or before security; once airside, you have no options at all. If you have a long international layover and absolutely must smoke, budget at least 90 minutes to two hours for the exit, smoke, and re-entry process.
