Warnings & Caveats

The Apron Bar smoking area opposite Gate 8 was under renovation as of April 2026 and may be temporarily unavailable. The IQOS Lounge near Gate 1 does not permit traditional cigarettes or cigars, only heated tobacco and vaping devices. Slovakia prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces; smoking outside designated areas can result in fines.

Bratislava Airport (BTS) has a limited but real set of smoking options, and the situation airside has shifted noticeably over the past couple of years. The most reliable airside spot for traditional cigarettes is the smoking area inside the Apron Bar, opposite Gate 8, though as of April 2026 it is under renovation and technically for customers only. Before security, your only option is stepping outside the terminal building entirely.

Before Security

Smoking landside is straightforward: head outside any terminal entrance and look for the designated outdoor zones. There are no indoor smoking facilities on the landside side of the building. This is the simplest and most reliable option if you have time before check-in.

After Security

Airside options are more complicated and have changed several times recently:

  • IQOS Lounge near Gate 1: A glass-walled IQOS-branded lounge located next to the Mastercard Caproni Lounge, opposite Gate 1. It opened in June 2024 and is reportedly open 24/7. As of April 2025, a traveler confirmed this lounge is for heated tobacco devices (IQOS/vapes) only, not traditional cigarettes or cigars. No purchase appears to be required to enter.

  • Apron Bar smoking area, opposite Gate 8: A smoking area inside the Apron Bar, located before passport control (i.e., in the Schengen departure hall). As of April 2026, this area is under renovation. When open, signs indicate a purchase is required, but multiple travelers report being able to smoke without buying anything. This area accepts traditional cigarettes.

  • Coffeeshop Company near Gate 10: Historically, a smoking area existed inside the Coffeeshop Company cafe, located after passport control near Gate 10. This was confirmed by travelers as recently as 2018 and listed as open from two hours before the first flight until the last flight of the day. More recent reports do not confirm whether this spot is still active, so treat it as uncertain.

Vaping Rules

The IQOS Lounge near Gate 1 is specifically designated for heated tobacco products and vaping devices. Traditional cigarettes are not permitted there. Slovakia's general indoor smoking law bans smoking in enclosed public spaces, so vaping in non-designated areas is also not permitted.

Transit and Layovers

BTS is a single-terminal airport with a relatively compact layout. If you need to smoke between flights and your connection is tight, the landside outdoor areas require exiting the secure zone and going through security again, which may not be feasible. The airside options near Gates 1 and 8 are your best bet for a quick smoke without re-clearing security.

Bottom Line

For traditional cigarettes airside, the Apron Bar area near Gate 8 is your main option, but check whether it has reopened from renovation. For IQOS and vaping devices, the dedicated lounge near Gate 1 is open 24/7 and no purchase is needed.
