Smoking is banned inside all terminal buildings under UK law. The Drop and Go car park is a non-smoking zone despite some passengers ignoring the signs - staff may enforce this. Once airside, you cannot return landside to smoke without re-clearing security. Single-use disposable vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025 - travel with a rechargeable device. Vaping is treated the same as smoking: only permitted in the designated smoking areas.
Bristol Airport is one of the minority of UK airports that still provides airside smoking facilities, making it a relatively smoker-friendly stop by British standards. After security, you can smoke at a designated area near Gate 4 and at a newer, well-ventilated area near the Gates 21-33 corridor - both free to use and clearly signposted.
Before Security
Landside smoking is straightforward: head outside the terminal building to the designated outdoor areas at the front of the terminal. These are clearly marked and accessible before you check in or pass through security. The airport has asked passengers to use only these specific zones and not to light up in other areas such as the Drop and Go car park, where smoking is prohibited despite some passengers ignoring the signage.

After Security
Bristol offers two confirmed airside smoking locations, which puts it ahead of most UK regional airports:
Smoking area near Gate 4 - This is the longer-established spot, located downstairs to the right of Starbucks. You'll see the "Smoking area" sign alongside the Gate 4 sign. It's an enclosed room with a door, visible through glass panels. Confirmed by the airport's own spokesperson as of May 2025.
Smoking area near Gates 21-33 - A newer, well-ventilated area added or updated as of January 2026. Located approximately 100 yards after the entrance to the Gates 21-33 corridor, on the left before you turn right toward the gates. Clearly signposted on a large blue wall panel that also lists the multi-faith area.
Both areas are free to access - no entry fee, unlike Aberdeen or Leeds Bradford.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is treated identically to smoking at Bristol Airport. You can vape in the designated smoking areas (both before and after security) but not anywhere else inside the terminal building. The airport's official statement specifically mentions vaping alongside smoking in its rules. Single-use disposable vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025, so travel with a rechargeable device.
Practical Notes for Smokers
Some gates at Bristol, particularly those used by budget carriers, can involve a walk of up to 15 minutes from the main departures area. Factor this in if you plan to use the Gate 4 smoking room and then need to reach a distant gate. The Gates 21-33 smoking area is more conveniently placed if you're departing from that pier. Once airside, you cannot return landside for a smoke without exiting the secure zone and re-clearing security, which is not practical.
Bottom Line
Bristol is one of the better UK airports for smokers: two free airside smoking areas after security, plus outdoor zones before. Use the Gate 4 room or the Gates 21-33 area depending on your departure gate, and leave enough time to get back to your gate.
