Smoking policy at Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei International Airport (BWN)
Warnings & Caveats
Vaping is banned throughout Brunei, including inside the airport. Smoking outside the terminal must be at least 6 metres from any door or entrance. Violations of Brunei's smoking laws can result in fines or other penalties.
Brunei International Airport (BWN) has a limited but workable setup for smokers. The most notable airside option is a rooftop smoking terrace that opened after the airport's refurbishment, accessible to departing and transit passengers past security. Vaping is banned throughout Brunei, so leave your e-cigarettes and vape devices packed away entirely.
Before Security
Landside, smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building. You must stay at least 6 metres away from any entrance or door. There are no indoor smoking rooms or enclosed smoking lounges on the public side of the airport. If you need a smoke before checking in or after arriving, head outside and look for the designated spots away from the terminal entrances.
After Security
After clearing security, departing and transit passengers can access a rooftop smoking terrace. According to traveler reports from 2017, reaching it requires climbing a significant number of stairs, so it may not be practical for passengers with mobility difficulties. No elevator access to the terrace has been reported. The terrace is the only known airside smoking option at BWN, and there are no paid lounges with dedicated smoking facilities mentioned in available sources.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is banned in Brunei. This applies throughout the airport and the entire country. Do not attempt to vape anywhere on airport grounds, landside or airside.
Brunei Smoking Laws
Brunei enforces strict anti-smoking regulations. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public spaces, and many outdoor public areas are also designated smoke-free zones. Violations can result in fines. The sale of tobacco to anyone under 18 is illegal, and tobacco advertising is heavily restricted.
Transit and Layovers
Transit passengers have access to the rooftop terrace airside, which is a genuine convenience for long layovers. Just factor in the stair climb and allow enough time before your gate closes.
Bottom Line
You can smoke outside the terminal before security (6m from doors) and on the rooftop terrace after security, but vaping is completely banned across all of Brunei. The stair-only access to the airside terrace is worth knowing about if you have mobility concerns.
