Smoking policy at Cagliari, Cagliari Elmas International Airport (CAG)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking is banned in all enclosed public spaces in Italy, including all areas inside the terminal. Vaping (electronic cigarettes) is also prohibited inside the terminal under the same rules. Violating the smoking ban in non-designated areas can result in fines. The Prima Vista Lounge (the only airside smoking option) is closed during winter (November to March).
Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) has very limited smoking options, which is typical for Italian airports. Smoking inside the terminal building is completely banned, and your only realistic options are a small outdoor area landside or paying to enter the Prima Vista Lounge airside.
Before Security
The only free smoking option is outside the terminal building, in the designated areas just before you enter. A traveler report from February 2022 noted a couple of ashtrays positioned right outside the entrance doors on the departures level. The covered forecourt area visible in photos shows a bin/ashtray unit near the terminal entrance, which appears to be the spot. It is open-air and accessible to anyone, at any time.
Step outside the terminal entrance on the departures (first floor) level.
Look for the ashtray units positioned just before the automatic doors.
There is no enclosed smoking booth landside; you are simply standing on the covered exterior pavement.
After Security
Airside, the only confirmed smoking option is inside the Prima Vista Lounge by Aviapartner, located on the left side of the boarding area after you clear security. The lounge has a semi-outdoor or enclosed smoking area within it. Walk-in access costs 15 euros per person (children under 2 enter free), and the lounge is open daily from 08:10 to 19:45, but closes completely during the winter season (November through March). You can stay for up to three hours. Amenities include food and drinks, newspapers, Wi-Fi, and luggage storage.
An August 2024 traveler report confirmed there is a decent semi-outdoor smoking area inside this lounge. Outside of lounge access, there are no other airside smoking facilities.
Transit and Layovers
If you are connecting through CAG and need to smoke but cannot or do not want to pay for the lounge, you would need to exit the secure zone, smoke outside the terminal, and then go back through security again. This is only practical if you have enough time and your ticket/boarding pass allows re-entry through security.
Vaping Rules
Electronic cigarettes are subject to the same ban as tobacco in all enclosed public spaces in Italy, including airport terminals. Vaping is not permitted inside the terminal building.
Bottom Line
Smoke before security at the outdoor ashtray spots near the terminal entrance; airside, your only option is paying 15 euros to enter the Prima Vista Lounge, and that lounge is closed entirely from November to March.
