Cancun International Airport (CUN) has a genuinely complicated smoking situation, shaped by shifting Mexican anti-smoking laws and venue-by-venue decisions. The most reliable option at any time is the outdoor designated smoking area outside each terminal, accessible before security. Airside options exist but have opened and closed repeatedly since 2023, so you should verify on arrival.
Before Security
All terminals have outdoor smoking areas near their main entrances, landside. These spots are clearly marked with signage, equipped with ashtrays and waste bins, and open to anyone regardless of ticket or airline. No fee applies. This is the one consistent, always-available option across the whole airport.

After Security
This is where things get complicated. The history here matters:
Terminal 3, Guy Fieri's American Kitchen Bar: This outdoor patio/beer garden has been the main airside smoking spot for years. Access costs $10 USD per person, which is credited toward food or drink. You receive a wristband that allows re-entry throughout the day. However, in January 2023 a new Mexican law banning smoking in food-serving establishments caused the garden to close temporarily, with signage changed from "Smoking" to "Sunny." By December 2023, multiple travelers reported it had reopened as a designated smoking area with the same $10 entry fee. A December 2025 report notes it may only operate from 5 PM onward, so morning departures may find it closed. Always check the door on arrival.
Terminal 2, TGI Fridays: Previously had an outdoor smoking patio accessible after security via an elevator, with a $7 entry fee. As of January 2023, this area was reported closed and has not been confirmed as reopened.
Terminal 4: Consistently reported as having no after-security smoking facilities.
Vaping Rules
Mexico has a national vaping ban that restricts e-cigarettes in public spaces. At CUN, vaping is treated the same as traditional smoking: only permitted in designated outdoor areas before security, or within the Guy Fieri's patio in Terminal 3 if it is open. Do not vape inside any terminal building.
Transit and Layovers
If you are transiting through CUN and cannot exit the secure zone, your only realistic airside option is the Guy Fieri's patio in Terminal 3, subject to its operating hours and the $10 fee. If you are in Terminal 2 or Terminal 4 airside, there are currently no confirmed smoking options.
Bottom Line
Smoke before security at the outdoor areas outside any terminal entrance; airside, your only real option is the Guy Fieri's patio in Terminal 3 for $10, but confirm it is open when you arrive since hours and rules have changed repeatedly.
