Smoking policy at Monterrey, General Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking outside designated areas is illegal under Mexican law and can result in an on-the-spot fine of approximately 250 pesos. Vaping is banned nationwide in Mexico. Do not use e-cigarettes anywhere at MTY. If you exit security to smoke landside, allow extra time to clear security screening again before your flight.
Smoking at Monterrey's General Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY) is tightly restricted, as it is across all of Mexico. The only free smoking option is stepping outside the terminal building to a designated outdoor area before security. Airside, your sole option is the OMA lounge, which charges around USD $25 for access.
Before Security
Landside smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor zones outside the terminal buildings. There are no indoor smoking rooms or enclosed smoking areas on the public side of the terminal. If you want a cigarette before checking in or going through security, you need to head outside and find a marked smoking zone near the terminal entrance. Do not smoke anywhere else outside these designated spots, as Mexican law prohibits smoking in most public places and violations carry an on-the-spot fine.
After Security
Once you clear security at MTY, free smoking spots do not exist inside the terminal. The OMA Lounge is the only reported facility with smoking access airside, and entry costs approximately USD $25 (walk-in rate). The OMA Lounge is a paid airport lounge, so you do not need an airline business class ticket, but you do need to pay the entry fee. If you do not want to pay, your only alternative is to exit the secure area, smoke outside in the designated outdoor zone, and then go back through security screening again before your flight. Factor in extra time if you plan to do this, especially during busy periods.
Vaping Rules
Mexico has a nationwide vaping ban. E-cigarettes, vape pens, and similar devices are prohibited throughout the country, including inside and outside the airport. Do not attempt to vape anywhere at MTY.
Transit and Layovers
If you have a long layover and need to smoke, your realistic choices are: pay the OMA Lounge entry fee to access their smoking facilities airside, or exit the terminal, smoke in the outdoor designated zone, and re-enter through security. Re-entry is permitted, but budget enough time to clear screening again before your gate closes.
Bottom Line
Smoke outside before you go through security if you want a free option. Airside, the OMA Lounge at roughly USD $25 is your only choice, and vaping is banned everywhere in Mexico.
