Warnings & Caveats
A fine of up to 200 euros applies for smoking or vaping in non-designated areas inside the terminal building. Photography and filming in and around the airport are strictly prohibited for military security reasons.
Chania International Airport (CHQ) has a strict no-smoking policy inside the terminal building and in all airside areas. The only place you can smoke is outside the terminal, before you pass through security. Once you go through the security checkpoint, there is no way to smoke until you land at your destination.
Before Security
Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building, landside. You'll need to step outside through the main entrance before checking in or before passing through security screening.
Head outside through the main terminal entrance on the ground floor.
Smoke in the designated outdoor zones away from the entrance doors.
There are no indoor smoking rooms or enclosed smoking cabins anywhere in the landside area.
Keep in mind that during the busy summer season (July and August), the terminal can get very crowded, and security queues can take over 30 minutes. Factor that into your timing if you plan to smoke before going through.
After Security
There are no smoking areas of any kind after security at CHQ. The entire airside departure lounge, all 16 gates (10 Schengen, 6 non-Schengen), the duty-free shops, cafes, and all other airside facilities are strictly non-smoking. There is no VIP lounge, no Priority Pass lounge, and no paid lounge at this airport that could offer a smoking option.
Transit and Connecting Flights
Chania does not operate as a hub for connecting flights, but if you do have a connection here, be aware that you cannot smoke airside. To smoke, you would need to exit the secure zone, go outside the terminal, and then re-queue through security. Given that security can take 30 or more minutes in peak season, this is a significant time commitment and is generally not practical for short layovers.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is treated the same as smoking at CHQ. It is not permitted inside the terminal building or in any airside area. Vaping in non-designated areas can result in a fine.
Bottom Line
Smoke before you check in and go through security, because once you are airside at CHQ, there are zero options until you land. No lounges, no smoking rooms, no exceptions.
