Smoking policy at Chennai, Chennai International Airport (MAA)
Warnings & Caveats
Vaping and e-cigarettes are completely illegal in India under PECA 2019. Possession alone can result in confiscation, fines up to Rs 1 lakh, and up to one year imprisonment for a first offence. Lighters and matchboxes are confiscated at all security checkpoints at MAA. Electric lighters are provided inside the smoking rooms. Smoking outside a designated zone is a compoundable offence under COTPA with a spot fine of up to Rs 200. Cigarettes are reportedly not sold inside the terminal, so purchase them before entering.
Chennai International Airport (MAA) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in India, with designated indoor smoking zones available after security in both the domestic and international terminals. The key fact: you can smoke airside without exiting security, which matters a lot on layovers. Before security, smoking is restricted to outdoor designated spots near terminal entrances and taxi stands.
Before Security
Landside smoking is outdoor-only. You'll find designated spots with ashtrays at:
Terminal entrances: Ash bins are placed near the entry and exit points of both terminals.
Between terminals walkway: The walkway connecting T1 and T2 has smoking spots near the coffee shops in that area.
Taxi stands: Designated smoking zones are available near the taxi pickup points outside both terminals.
Arrivals hall exits: Smoking spots are located near the main exits outside the arrivals hall.
None of these are enclosed rooms, so you're outside in Chennai's heat and humidity.
After Security
This is where MAA genuinely delivers. Multiple indoor smoking zones are available post-security across all terminals.
Domestic Terminal T4 (New Domestic Terminal):
Near Gate 1: The main smoking zone is at the far end of the T4 departure hall, next to boarding Gate 1, toward the gates 7-10 end. After clearing security, walk to the very end of the terminal.
Travel Club Lounge, 3rd Floor: Turn right toward Gate 1 after security and head up to the 3rd floor. The Travel Club Lounge has a separate smoking zone outside the lounge that is reportedly accessible even without a lounge membership, though the lounge itself requires a pass or payment.
Domestic Terminal T1 (Kamaraj Terminal):
Far left of departure area: After clearing security in T1, walk to the far left end of the departure hall. The designated smoking zone is at the very end, clearly marked with signage.
International Terminal T2 (New Integrated Terminal Building / NITB):
Near gates, left side: One smoking zone is in the newer section of the international terminal, near the gates on the left side after clearing immigration.
TFS Travel Club Lounge, 2nd Floor: In the older section of the international terminal, a smoking zone is located near the TFS Travel Club Lounge on the 2nd floor. Some travelers can access this smoking section separately.
Lighters and Cigarettes
Lighters and matchboxes are confiscated at security across all Indian airports, including MAA. The post-security smoking rooms are equipped with wall-mounted electric lighters. To use one: wait for the red indicator light, press the button (the red light goes off as the coil heats), wait up to a minute, then hold your cigarette tip against the amber coil for 3-5 seconds. The most common mistake is pressing the button when the red light is already off.
Cigarettes are reportedly not sold inside the terminal, so stock up before you arrive. Shops near the airport entrance carry the usual brands.
Vaping Rules
Vaping is completely illegal in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA) 2019. This covers possession, sale, import, and use of all e-cigarettes, vapes, and heat-not-burn devices including IQOS. Penalties start at up to one year imprisonment and fines up to Rs 1 lakh for a first offence. Do not bring any vaping device into India.
Transit and Layovers
Transit passengers can access the post-security smoking zones without exiting the terminal. Head toward Gate 1 in T4 for domestic connections, or toward the left-side gates or TFS Lounge area in T2 for international connections.
Bottom Line
MAA has solid post-security smoking coverage across all terminals, so layovers are manageable. Leave your vape at home, buy cigarettes before entering the terminal, and expect to use an electric lighter inside.
