Smoking policy at Kochi, Cochin International Airport (COK)

Warnings & Caveats

Personal lighters are confiscated at all Indian airport security checkpoints. Use the electric lighter machines inside the smoking rooms, or bring matchboxes. Vaping (e-cigarettes) is banned throughout India under PECA. Do not vape at COK. Smoking outside the designated rooms is prohibited. Informal spots near parking or drop-off areas are not officially sanctioned.

Cochin International Airport (COK) has designated indoor smoking rooms in both its domestic and international terminals, all located after security in the departure areas. There are no formal outdoor smoking zones immediately outside the terminal buildings, so your only reliable option is to clear security first and use one of the enclosed rooms.

Before Security

There are no officially designated smoking areas landside or outside the terminal entrances. Some older traveler reports mention informal spots near parking areas or waste bins at the far end of the departures drop-off, but these are not sanctioned zones and security staff may ask you to stop. Smoking in parking areas is technically at your own risk, with no formal infrastructure.

After Security

This is where COK actually delivers for smokers. Two terminals have enclosed smoking rooms:

  • Terminal 1 (Domestic): The smoking room is on the 3rd floor in the Food Court area, next to Hanger Bar. It is an indoor enclosed zone accessible after clearing security and is the primary option for domestic passengers.

  • Terminal 3 (International): The smoking room is on the 4th floor in the Security Hold Area, inside the Food Court, alongside the airline lounges. A traveler report from March 2023 places it next to the Firefly bar. This is the main option for international and Gulf-route passengers.

Both rooms are enclosed and ventilated. Terminal 2 is an older, limited-use facility for some domestic and charter flights and does not appear to have a confirmed dedicated smoking room.

Electric Lighter Machines

This is critical: personal lighters are confiscated at Indian airport security checkpoints. Both the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 smoking rooms have wall-mounted electric lighter machines to compensate. To use one: wait for the red indicator light to turn on, press the red button (the light goes off as the coil heats), wait up to a minute, then hold your cigarette tip against the glowing amber coil for 3 to 5 seconds. The most common mistake is pressing the button when the red light is already off. Matchboxes can sometimes be brought through security, but lighters cannot.

Vaping Rules

Vaping and e-cigarettes are banned in India under the PECA (Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act). Do not attempt to vape anywhere at COK or any other Indian airport.

Transit and Layovers

If you are transiting through COK on an international connection, you can access the Terminal 3 smoking room airside without going through immigration again. Older reports suggested some transit passengers had to exit the airport to smoke, but that was before the current smoking rooms were installed. The airside room should cover most transit needs.

Bottom Line

Smoke after security in Terminal 1 (3rd floor, Food Court near Hanger Bar) or Terminal 3 (4th floor, Food Court near Firefly bar). Bring matchboxes if you need your own fire source, or rely on the electric lighter machines provided in each room.
