Warnings & Caveats
Connecting passengers cannot stay airside between flights. You must exit Turkey, smoke outside the terminal, and re-clear security for your onward flight. Allow extra time. The former smoking room near Gate 24 was reported closed as of July 2017 and has not been reinstated.
Dalaman Airport (DLM) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in Turkey, with open-air courtyard smoking terraces available airside after security in both the international and domestic terminals. Before security, smoking is restricted to designated outdoor areas outside the terminal buildings. Connecting passengers who need to smoke face a real inconvenience: you must exit into Turkey, smoke outside, then re-queue through security for your onward flight.
Before Security
Landside smoking is only permitted outside the terminal buildings in designated outdoor areas. There are no indoor smoking rooms or enclosed zones before security. Head outside through the main entrance doors to find the permitted spots near the passenger entrance.
After Security
This is where DLM genuinely delivers for smokers. The new international terminal (opened April 2018) has two open-sky courtyard smoking terraces in the departures area after security:
One courtyard is located opposite McDonald's
A second courtyard is located further along the departures concourse, opposite Gate 39, and a September 2024 traveler report confirms it has tables
Both are open-air, enclosed by the terminal structure, and accessible to all departing passengers after clearing security. A third smoking courtyard is inside the CIP Executive Lounge on the 1st (mezzanine) floor of the international terminal, near Gate 39.
Domestic Terminal
The domestic departures area also has open-sky smoking terrace access after the second security checkpoint, consistent with the airport's official FAQ policy. The domestic CIP Lounge (near Gate 4, open 05:00-23:00) also has a smoking area for lounge guests.
CIP Lounges (Paid Access)
Both CIP Lounges are pay-at-the-door and include smoking terraces:
International CIP Lounge (airside, mezzanine level, near Gate 39): walk-in price approximately 2,454 TRY per person for up to 3 hours. Also accessible via prepaid lounge passes, Priority Pass, and credit card lounge programs. Open 24 hours.
Domestic CIP Lounge (airside, near Gate 4): walk-in price approximately 1,753 TRY per person for up to 3 hours. Open 05:00-23:00.
Transit and Connecting Flights
If you have a connecting flight through DLM, be aware that you cannot stay airside between flights. You must enter Turkey, go outside to smoke, and then re-clear security. Factor in extra time if you plan to do this.
Vaping
No specific vaping policy is mentioned in available sources. Treat vaping the same as smoking and use the designated terraces to be safe.
Bottom Line
DLM is genuinely good for smokers airside: the open courtyard terraces after security are free to use and well-placed near the gates. Just plan ahead if you are connecting, since re-entry through security takes time.
