Smoking policy at Denver, Denver International Airport (DEN)
Warnings & Caveats
Smoking in non-designated areas inside the terminal is strictly prohibited and can result in significant fines and penalties. Vaping and e-cigarettes are generally treated the same as traditional smoking indoors and should be restricted to designated outdoor areas.
Denver International Airport (DEN) has a very restrictive smoking policy, primarily limiting smoking to designated outdoor areas. For travelers passing through DEN, it is crucial to understand that smoking is strictly prohibited inside the terminal buildings, including all concourses (A, B, and C) once you have passed through security. The airport's policy emphasizes a smoke-free environment indoors, aligning with broader public health regulations in Colorado. This means that if you are a smoker, you must plan accordingly, as there are no longer any indoor smoking lounges available after security checkpoints. Historically, DEN did offer an indoor smoking lounge called the "Smokin' Bear Lodge Smoking Lounge" located in Concourse C. This lounge, situated at the core/middle of Concourse C, specifically between gates C39 and C40 near the Timberline restaurant, was a paid facility. It charged a $3 cover fee, which was typically applied towards the purchase of a first drink. Travelers reported that this lounge allowed re-entry multiple times on the same day, provided you retained your receipt. However, as of an update from March 2018, and confirmed by a sign (Image 1), the Smokin' Bear Lodge is now permanently closed due to lease terms. This closure signifies a complete shift to an entirely smoke-free environment within the secure areas of the airport. For those who need to smoke, the only option available is to use the designated smoking areas located outside the Jeppesen Terminal building, prior to passing through security. These areas are clearly marked and are the sole locations where smoking is permitted on airport property. It is important to note that once you proceed through security to Concourses A, B, or C, you cannot exit the secure area to smoke and then re-enter without going through security screening again. This makes it impractical for connecting passengers or those with limited time between flights. Therefore, if you anticipate needing to smoke, it is advisable to do so before checking in or immediately upon arrival if you are not connecting. Travelers should be aware that attempting to smoke in non-designated areas within the airport, including restrooms, gate areas, or any other indoor space, is strictly forbidden and can result in significant fines and penalties. Colorado has stringent indoor air quality laws, and airports are diligent in enforcing these regulations. Vaping and the use of e-cigarettes are generally treated the same as traditional smoking in most public indoor spaces in Colorado, and it is safest to assume they are also prohibited inside DEN's terminals. Always look for official signage and adhere to airport staff instructions regarding smoking policies. Planning ahead is key for smokers at Denver International Airport to avoid inconvenience or penalties.
