Smoking policy at Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura Airport (FUE)

Warnings & Caveats

Smoking anywhere inside the terminal building is illegal under Spanish Laws 28/2005 and 42/2010. Fines for smoking in a prohibited area start at 30 euros for a minor offence and can reach 600 to 10,000 euros for more serious violations such as smoking in restricted zones or tampering with smoke detectors. E-cigarettes and vaping devices are subject to the same indoor ban as traditional cigarettes. Once you pass through passport control into the B-gate area, you cannot re-enter the main departure lounge.

Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) is one of the more smoker-friendly airports in the Canary Islands, with three outdoor airside terraces open after security where you can light up while waiting for your flight. Smoking indoors anywhere in the terminal is banned under Spanish law (Laws 28/2005 and 42/2010), and that ban covers e-cigarettes and vaping devices too.

Before Security

Landside, smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal building itself. There are no indoor smoking rooms or covered landside zones. If you arrive early and need a cigarette before checking in, head outside the terminal entrance to the marked outdoor spots before going through check-in and security.

After Security

Once you clear security and head upstairs to the departure lounge, you have three outdoor terrace options:

  • Southern terrace (north end of the terminal): A sit-down terrace at the northern end of the airside departure area. It has a self-service food and drink counter, so you can grab a coffee or a snack while you smoke. This is the most comfortable of the three spots.

  • Middle terrace (next to Burger King): Located roughly in the centre of the departure lounge, directly adjacent to the Burger King. It is a smaller covered outdoor corner, described by travellers as standing-room only with no seating. Good for a quick smoke between meals.

  • Far-end terrace (past passport control, Gate B area): At the far end of the terminal, past the passport control booths used for UK-bound flights. This terrace is only accessible once you have gone through passport control, so if you are flying to a non-EU destination (including the UK), this is your option near the gate. Be aware that once you pass through passport control into the B-gate area, you cannot return to the main departure lounge.

All three areas are open-air, clearly signposted, and equipped with ashtrays. They are large enough that non-smokers also use them for fresh air and sea views, so they are not cramped.

Jable VIP Lounge

Fuerteventura has one airport lounge, the Jable VIP Lounge, located at the far left end of the departure lounge when facing the sea. Walk-in access costs just over 30 euros per adult. It is also free for Priority Pass members and Iberia Express business class passengers. The sources do not specifically confirm a dedicated smoking terrace inside the Jable lounge (unlike the Guacimeta Lounge at Lanzarote), so treat the three public terraces as your primary airside options.

Vaping Rules

E-cigarettes and vaping devices are treated the same as traditional cigarettes under Spanish airport law. You cannot vape anywhere inside the terminal building. Use the same outdoor terraces if you vape.

Bottom Line

You have genuinely good airside smoking options at FUE: three open terraces after security, one with seating and food service. Just remember the B-gate terrace is a one-way trip once you clear passport control.
