Smoking is prohibited inside the entire terminal building under the Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006. George Best Belfast City Airport operates under a strict no-smoking policy inside the terminal building, as required by the Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006. The only place you can smoke at BHD is in the designated outdoor area immediately outside the main terminal entrance, before you pass through security. Once you go airside, there are no smoking facilities of any kind.
Before Security
The single designated smoking area is located just outside the main terminal entrance, right next to the glass-walled entrance doors and the trolley park. You can spot it easily: green "SMOKING AREA" signs are posted on both sides of the entrance canopy, and a litter bin is provided for cigarette disposal. The spot is open-air and partially covered by the terminal's entrance canopy, so you get some shelter from Belfast's frequent rain. It is freely accessible to anyone, passengers and non-passengers alike, at any time the terminal is open.
Head out through the main entrance doors and look immediately to your left or right alongside the trolley park.
Smoking bins are provided; the signs ask you to ensure all cigarettes are extinguished before re-entering.
Smoking is explicitly prohibited near or approaching any aircraft, so do not attempt to smoke anywhere on the apron side.
After Security
There are no smoking facilities airside at BHD. Once you pass through the departures security checkpoint in the middle of the main hall, you cannot smoke until you land at your destination. The airport has no paid lounges with smoking rooms or terraces on the airside. There is no option to exit security and re-enter to use the landside smoking area, so time your last cigarette before you join the security queue.
Vaping Rules
The sources do not explicitly address vaping or e-cigarettes at BHD. Given that Northern Ireland's smoke-free regulations cover enclosed public spaces, it is safest to treat vaping the same as smoking and use only the outdoor designated area before security. Check with airport staff on arrival if you are unsure.
