Smoking policy at Lisbon, Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS)

Warnings & Caveats

Heavy fines apply for smoking anywhere outside the officially designated "Espaço fumadores" areas. The Gate 47 e-cigarette room closes at 8pm daily. No airside smoking option exists after 8pm if the Gate 19-21 room is also closed. The Terminal 2 smoking room has been reported closed or under works as recently as 2024. Verify with staff on arrival. Some smoking rooms have been restricted to e-cigarettes and IQOS only. Check signage before lighting a regular cigarette.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) does allow smoking, but the options are genuinely limited and the situation has been in flux. All smoking must happen inside officially designated "Espaço fumadores" (smoking area) cabins airside in Terminal 1, and the rules around which rooms accept regular cigarettes versus e-cigarettes only have changed repeatedly. Expect a long walk to reach any of them.

Before Security

There are no landside (before security) smoking areas in either terminal. Once you check in and drop your bags, you need to clear security before you can access any smoking facility. There is no option to step outside and re-enter once you are airside.

After Security: Terminal 1

Terminal 1 has the most options, though the situation has been complicated by closures and restrictions:

  • Smoking room between Gates 19 and 21 (S-concourse): This is the main, most accessible smoking room for regular cigarettes. It is a large, glass-walled enclosed cabin clearly signed "zona de fumadores" on the overhead boards in the S-concourse. Follow signs for Gates S19-21 after security. The room was closed for refurbishment in mid-2023 but traveler reports from April 2024 confirm it reopened and accepts normal cigarettes. This is the closest option to the main shopping plaza.

  • E-cigarette room near Gate 47: At the far northern end of Terminal 1, this glass-walled cabin is exclusively for e-cigarettes, vapes, and IQOS devices. Regular cigarettes are not permitted here. It closes daily at 8pm, so late-evening travelers have no airside option for any device after that hour. It is a long walk from the central shopping area but tends to be quieter.

  • ANA Lounge smoking room: The ANA Lounge on the upper level of Terminal 1 (accessible via escalator near Gate 22, next to Starbucks) has a dedicated glass-walled smoking cabin inside. Walk-in access costs 36 euros for up to three hours. The lounge is open 06:00 to 22:00 daily. It includes food, drinks, Wi-Fi, and showers. Business and first-class passengers on eligible airlines (KLM, Delta, Turkish Airlines, and others) may receive free or discounted access. This is the most comfortable smoking option in the airport.

After Security: Terminal 2

Terminal 2 serves low-cost carriers (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Transavia). There is reportedly a smoking room close to the security and passport control area, but multiple traveler reports from 2023 and 2024 indicate it has been closed or under works. Confirm with airport staff on arrival. If it is closed, there is no airside smoking option in Terminal 2.

Vaping Rules

Vaping and IQOS devices are permitted in the same designated smoking rooms as regular cigarettes in most cases, but the Gate 47 room is exclusively for smoke-free alternatives. Some traveler comments suggest certain rooms have been converted to IQOS-only use, so check the signage carefully before assuming regular cigarettes are welcome.

Transit and Layovers

If you are transiting through Terminal 1, the smoking room between Gates 19 and 21 is your most reliable option. You cannot exit to landside and re-enter without going through security again, so plan accordingly before you clear passport control.

Bottom Line

Your best free option is the smoking room near Gates 19-21 in Terminal 1 (open for regular cigarettes, 24 hours when not under refurbishment). If you want comfort and a guaranteed smoke, pay 36 euros for the ANA Lounge. Terminal 2 smokers should prepare for the possibility of no airside option at all.
