John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

JFK is a fully indoor smoke-free airport. There are zero smoking options once you pass through security, so plan your last cigarette before you enter the terminal. All smoking is restricted to designated outdoor zones at curbside, and New York City law requires you to stay at least 25 feet from any entrance or exit.

Before Security

Every active terminal at JFK has at least one outdoor designated smoking zone accessible from the arrivals or departures curbside. Here is where to find them:

• Terminal 1: Outside near the arrival and departure curbside areas, along the Belt Parkway side.

• Terminal 4: Outside on Level 1 (arrivals) and Level 3 (departures), curbside on the Grand Central Parkway side. This is the busiest terminal, so these spots see heavy use.

• Terminal 5: Outside on Level 1 (arrivals) and Level 3 (departures), along the JFK Expressway side. Sources note up to three curbside zones here to reduce crowding.

• Terminal 7: Outdoor curbside zones near the terminal entrance, same 25-foot spacing rule applies.

• Terminal 8: Outside the departures level (Level 3), on the JFK Expressway side.

All zones are marked with signage and most have ashtrays or cigarette disposal bins. You do not need to go through any paid area to reach them.

After Security

There are no smoking areas of any kind after security at JFK. No airline lounge, no designated room, no enclosed cabin. The airport's policy explicitly states there are no smoking facilities inside the terminal, and this has not changed as of April 2026. If you need to smoke during a layover, you must exit the secure area entirely, use an outdoor curbside zone, and then re-enter through security screening. During peak periods at Terminal 4 or Terminal 8, that re-entry queue can add 30 to 60 minutes to your time, so factor that in carefully before leaving the secure zone.

Vaping Rules

E-cigarettes, vapes, and all electronic smoking devices are treated identically to traditional cigarettes under New York City's Smoke-Free Air Act (2003). They are banned inside all terminal buildings and may only be used in the same outdoor designated zones as cigarettes. Using a vape inside the terminal is not a grey area at JFK.

Transit and Layovers

If you have a connecting flight and want to smoke, the exit-and-reenter process is your only option. Keep in mind that JFK's terminals are not all connected airside, so depending on your connection you may need to take the AirTrain between terminals after clearing security again. Give yourself at minimum 90 minutes if you plan to exit, smoke, and re-enter during a connection.

Bottom Line

Smoke before you enter the terminal, at the clearly marked outdoor curbside zones, and stay at least 25 feet from the doors. Once you are past security, there is no legal way to smoke or vape anywhere at JFK.
